68 Cougar Improvements

I have a 68 cougar with the below setup;
Stock 302 with dual header exhaust running through Flowmaster 44 mufflers. New Holley 600 on top of an aluminum performer intake. Electronic ignition setup as well.

I’m not looking for a street demon or anything. Just would like to get a little more muscle from the old girl. I figure I’ve done everything i can with bolt on performance upgrades.

My question to all of you is what would probably be the best next step for me in adding some power? Cam? Aluminum heads? Would love opinions on where to go from here.

Thanks!

Cam will give you more performance . That said aluminum heads will give you the ability to run even more cam than stock iron heads. Especially if you have the 2v heads to start with.

These heads and a nice cam .

I have a very similar set up as you with a aftermarket cam and aluminum heads. This was my first engine built/install and very happy with the results.
It’s a real screamer! Punch it at 30mph and she flat out launches.
Got the short block already done and installed the cam,heads,intake, and carb. DIY rebuild of the C4 trans with shift kit.
For the heads I had to change the springs as they are set up for roller out of the box. Would be cheaper to buy bare heads. Also had to get longer pushrods. YouTube on cam below. Nice sound and still have enough vacuum for power brakes.
I highly recommend these two components to give you the extra punch your looking for and it was reasonable cost

I used the same camshaft in a 289 / 4 speed application. It’s a great choice for a smaller sized engine. Very impressed by the performance.
