So frustrated. I just blew my second high pressure power steering line. Seems like as the steering wheel is turned, the hoses “slide” and when they do, one of them that has a sharp 90 bend in it fails. What am I doing wrong? It’s always the thinner one, not the thicker high pressure line.
Been there too. Problem is low quality hoses that do not fit or route correctly. These aren’t cheap, but they fit right and don’t leak:
Calicat is right. They have to fit and route correctly, many don’t and will fail due to bending too sharply. WCCC has good ones as well.
The two long tube ends of the hoses that connect from the pump to the control valve should also have a hose clamp holding them securely against the control valve body.
Auto part store hoses fit like that and will fail rapidly. The ones from Blue Dot are like the originals and don’t have those issues.
Ok. Going for my third try at this. Getting really annoyed. Ordered the Blue Dot hoses this time. So quality hoses. I think I understand the routing in the images in this thread. @Calicat mentioned a hose clamp on the hoses at the control valve. Where? In this image, is it where I put the red highlight? Like a 4” metal hose clamp? Any other tricks?? Would love to not have Power Steering ATF on my driveway again! Thanks guys!
You can see the clamp at center right in this picture. I had to rotate and bend the hoses a bit to get them to hug the control valve. Also, the metal fittings are supposed to be anchored in the rubber isolator block rather than the hoses themselves. The whole hydraulic boost system is a pain.
I feel like there is no way my metal fittings will reach the rubber block. I wonder if my routing from the pump is wrong too! Thank you for all of the help. These pictures are really helping me piece it together.
The return hose simply goes down if you have a big block. If you have a small block, the return hose goes up first and then through a loop attached to the shock tower. The small block needs a special reservoir to make this happen with the return pointing up.
Mine is a 70 351C and the return just goes straight down without a loop to the shock tower. I believe they all went straight down by 70. So yeah, a 69 might route a bit different than mine.
69 and 1970 are different than 1968 so it is sort of off topic.
I thought Brentb529 was working on a 69.
If so he is missing the under frame bracket and the hoses are 1968 style.
Correct @Calicat 1969 with a 351w. What am I bracket am I missing?? And I am pretty sure I have the right hoses for the 1969 @Royce but at this point, I know nothing!
hoses I just ordered from Blue Dot:
-
PS9W3
-
PS4U2
-
PS3U4
-
PS7U1B
-
PS4U1A
The bracket under the frame is missing - you need these parts -
Looks to me like the bracket is there, but the pressure hose forward of the bracket is very different from mine. I can’t make any sense out of the Blue Dot part numbers, but if Royce recognizes it as a 68 hose, that might be the problem.
Hers a pic from bluedot
The Blue Dot part numbers are the same as the Ford part numbers. You need six part numbers. Two of them are labeled “Windsor”. Two are the short ones from the pump to the cylinder. The other two are from the control valve to the under car bracket.
Guys, perhaps we can document the exact parts list for each year and engine combination. Or If Blue Dot would like to post that they would be invited to do so (Many forums charge retail dealers to post. We do not. This is not a license to advertise it is an opportunity to interact with customers)
