COMPLETE direct fit AOD conversion for a 1965 to 1973 Mustang or Cougar. May fit other Ford Car and Truck models with minor modifications such as the rear cross member. Buyer needs to do their own research for other applications.

The AOD has about 1,000 miles on it and owner wants to go to manual transmission. Items you will receive are the AOD, the torque convertor, the complete driveshaft recently balanced by D&D Drivelines of Tacoma Washington. You get the block plate, a reprogramed stock shifter and rod, and the overdrive cancel switch. Also accessory deep pan, dip stick, tranny cooler, and Lokar TV cable. The stock shifter was modified to force usage of the shift button to be pushed in to reach the neutral position. No more accidental manual shifts from 2nd to 3rd and hitting neutral under full power!!

The AOD and conversion kit is Performance Automatic Transmission Center (PATC) AO Dominator package. Rated to withstand up to 750 HP. Came with the matching torque convertor rated at about 3,000 rpm depending on weight of car and gear ratio. See link below:

The valve body was replaced with a Lentech Strip Terminator AOD ( No Brake ). This valve body is state of the art and allows for full manual shifting of an AOD in a normal C4 1, 2. 3 pattern. No more stupid AOD shift pattern and lack of the manual shift feature! Also includes the overdrive lockout feature which is a lighted rocker switch mounted on the dash. This is how Ford should have built the AOD in the first place. This valve body increases line pressure and durability of the transmission under power. What did it come out of? Driveshafts are different lengths for Mustang and Cougar.

A 1968 Mustang GT/CS Coupe. Different lengths? I did not know that!!! See, now I be “learnin” yet again!!

Yup, the Cougar driveshaft is a little longer than one for the same year/driveline Mustang.

FYI… If you are replacing a FMX with the AOD, no need to change the driveshaft. Just install the AOD slip yoke on the FMX driveshaft. The AOD transmission is about 1/4" longer than the FMX and will work fine with the stock FMX driveshaft.

For anyone considering upgrading to the AOD. It is well worth the upgrade for street/highway driveability. I have done 2 69 Cougar FMX to AOD upgrades and love them. I would highly recommend going with the non-direct drive torque converter over the stock AOD direct drive converter. I also highly recommend the Lentec AOD valve body with overdrive lock out. I have the Lentec street terminator valve bodies in all 3 of my AODs. The Eliminator has the Lentech calibration 1 valve body and my XR-7 has a custom calibration 2 as well as my 89 T-Bird SC has the calibration 2. They are well worth the investment.

@Superchicken89 i know this is an older thread, reading through as I start my AOD conversion. From what I am seeing on this thread and what you’re saying…… new crossmember and the shifter linkage and whatnot is about all that is needed for this conversion? If anyone else has input, would love the advice. I know there’s plenty of threads on this as well.
