It appears that all of the archives have gone missing from “the other site”. Don Rush stated they were being deleted to save space. Not sure if that’s really the case, but I think I’ve had enough. I couldn’t find any threads that were more than a few weeks old. I’m no longer going to spend any time over there. They can go ahead and fill their site with useless content like Nopi ads.
That is weired, I just made a simple search on MC.net for XR7-G and the result was:
“Sorry - no matches. Please try some different terms.”
If there really are no matches for XR7-G in their database the forum is completely useless for everyone.
LOL, they can delete all my posts, if they are hurting that badly for “space”.
Computer stoarge space is so cheap, it probably costs more to delete stuff than to let it be. Deleting old threads just doesn’t make sense.
Is this really happening? How can you tell?
I tried to look into it and found threads back to 2001… including this gem on 2001 Gas Prices
I registered over here a while back, but haven’t been reading the forums often. With all the changes at MC.net, I’ll be spending a lot more time here. Looks like a great start to a new community!
Well, I checked some old links I had in my favorites list and it seems like all the old information is there, but For some reason I am unable to search the forum for them. Maybe it is a bug or my browser (Opera). Anyways, I am glad to see that the old post still exists.
I did a test search for “hijackers” and it found results going way back.
Regardless of whether or not they’re deleting the archive posts (which would be a damn shame), I believe it was Bob who said about mc.net that “the writing is on the wall.”
“You were a good ship and served us well.” (words spoken to MC.net from the stern of a lifeboat).
T3 you survived the earthquake.
That’s crazy but that big business. I’ve seen it happen to countless great forums. I’m glad Bill stepped in to save the day. Just in time too. When is Don Rush and his gang going to join in here?? Sadly as others feel the days of MC.net are numbered. I hope they have the brains to archive stuff like some other places do. So at least you can search and read only for info. And not just delete it to save space. What a waste and a shame!
I sincerely hope that they don’t delete anything on MC.Net. I tried a search for XR7-G and got no returns as well. Even if everything is there, if you can’t find it does that matter?
i agree if we cant find the years of knowledge that we have imputed there its very much so a lost cause. i am sad to see it go that way . i dont see much for things going backward at this point.
I hate to think it is possible, but maybe the old posts have been hidden, hopefully not deleted due to a post here on this forum about someone possibly making a copy of all the old posts for a data base? I really hope they are not gone forever as I search the old posts quite often for reference for the restoration of my Cats. If this is the case then there is definitely not much use for me to visit the other forum except for trying finish cleaning out my attic.
Don joined yesterday, Scott B.(CougarCJ) & Brian (BAust) are here also. John
I think they just changed their search algorithm is all.
I did a search for XR7-G and got 0 results.
I did a search for XR-7G and got 0 results.
I did a search for XR7G (no dash) and got 4 pages of results.
It’s all still there, it seems, it’s just you have to search for it in a specific way.
There is a real “the sky is falling” atmosphere today about them deleting posts, I don’t think there’s any reality behind it though, just some confusion.
Isn’t there a 110+ page thread over there that is eating up a ton of space?
If the archive of posts are there or not the case has been made that the site is losing favor with it members. It is a shame because a lot of good people made MC.net what it was and the new owners made it what it is.

Seems I remember, back when it came out that Steve E was going to shut down TCCN II in a modernization effort; there was some discussion about contacting authors of previous tech articles therein regarding a “re-write” of their articles for posting on MCN to preserve their insights.
(Bill, was this about the time you coined the “tribal knowledge” term?)
Perhaps this is now the time to reach out to longtime MCN contributors to do the same; only on these forums. Picking on Mr Basore for the second time in this single post; I’ll offer up the thought that, this time, the web page exists simply due to its owner’s continuing love for the breed; not commercial interest. Therefore it is highly unlikely to go the way of MCN; instead becoming the conservatory of this information.
OBTW: If you feel that this is a good idea, but that you’d don’t have the hands-on experience or the writing skills to add to this database; there’s one other thing you might do to help build this library. Up in the top right-hand corner of the forum pages (presently right above the picture of Blackie), there’s a yellow button labeled “Donate”. I personally don’t have the Cougar experience to relate essential knowledge -and I can be quite “wordy” in my posts if y’all didn’t notice- but I can at least help pay the light bill a little.
(“A little” The amount that jumped from my plastic through PayPal didn’t cover the gas for Bill to take his 427G one way to San Tan Ford for the car show and bring back pictures!)
That was the first time I ever “contributed” to a Forum’s upkeep; and it made me feel good. I’m cheap! -but I think this one is worthwhile. My '73 XR7 is not that THAT impressive in the Cougar culture -maybe Mitch and Milo (cougrrcj on MCN) would disagree- but I think anything that helps those of you with “more Classic” Cougars will, in the long run, help me out as well.
Just Sayin’
Thanks Dawg!
I posted this over there… I don’t want MC.Net to go away; nothing in that for the community as a whole. Bob had suggested that Don Rush was whistling Dixie what ever that means? The fact is that there have been numerous complaints by people that they could no longer find stuff that they knew was there. Maybe the search algorithm did change: the new one sucks if you can’t find stuff that you wrote and know to exist. Fix it, don’t get pissed at the posters.
Bob, when you get 0 returns for search for XR7-G, (and you do, try it), it really doesn’t matter what is there or not. People are searching for specific old content and not finding it. The conclusion that people will draw is that the content is no longer there if they can’t find it.
Most forum software is set up to “prune” threads that are either too old or not visited in some give period of time. It isn’t about storage space, it is about processor cycles on the server. You can’t limit the number of users, but you can limit the amount of data. This is really a data base issue to reduce the number of records that have to be searched, more than a storage space issue per se. In a shared server environment, which I am guessing is what is happening here based on speed and so on, the hard drives can be plenty big, but it takes processing cycles to go through all of that stuff. Ultimately even drive space can become an issue, not because space is expensive, but back ups become more time and processor intensive.
I used to go to McDonald’s. I like In 'n Out better, and I go there now. I don’t have to dislike McDonald’s in order to go to In 'n Out, it’s just about the food. MC.Net serves up what they serve up, and I have been coming here for a very long time. The owner doesn’t seem to care, Heck the manager, told us to “grow up and move on”. I still go to McDonald’s sometimes; the fries are great, but it’s not what it used to be.
The are probably using some form of storage management software that removes duplication and archives old stuff to cheaper tier 2 storage or NAS. Sometimes they lose pointers or the tags that point to the second tier storage. If it isn’t indexed correctly then you can’t find the stuff on the second tier storage. Sometimes it won’t index non-words or words of 3 characters or less - eg XR7 or hyphenated words like XR7-G if the rules aren’t correct
The comment on processor cycles on servers is not relevant anymore as is back-up limits now most cloud services use virtual tape libraries. With fibre connected storage arrays you just add virtual servers to your farm to meet front end load. You keep the latest stuff on tier 1 storage and archive the older stuff to low cost storage. Providers of forum services always want the cheapest storage because of volume of storage used. Many of them are moving to companies like HP and Dell and buying the cloud services because it is cheaper than having to refresh your EMC / HP Storage arrays every 5 years just to keep up with the speed increases.
