I’m having a heck of a time trying to decide my tag. Seems I cant figure out the whole thing. Any help would be much appreciated.
The factory mounted the tag upside down on your door. 
Looks like a special paint 1968 standard.
VIN 9F91C549983 = 8-1968, 91 Base body style C 289 2V 549983
65A = Base Cougar 2 door hard top
Blank = special order color
1F = Base saddle color interior
11C Scheduled build date of March 11 1968
516219 DSO 51 = Denver office special order number 6219(for the non standard paint color)
2 = 2.75 rear axle ratio
1 = 3 speed manual transmission

Is there a way to figure out what paint code the color is since it was a special order? The info is great!
Try looking under the back seat and in the trunk. If you post photos of the original paint color under there somebody might be able to identify it.
The build sheet can be under the driver’s seat, too - check with a mirror and flashlight. This is a real mystery short story!
Some cars and plants will list the color code on the buck tag. But all listed in on the lower section of the buildsheet. Will start out with something like WT then numbers that will match a color chip on the Fleet Color book the dealerships had. If it was built as a group (promotion or something like that ) the color may have been shared and the details obtained from those cars.
Lacking all of this the best you can do is to find an area with a nice coat of the paint in a hidden/protected area of the car and match it to a chip in a copy of the Fleet color chip book

Found a mention of that DSO code in Kevin Marti’s Cougar … by the Numbers.
519219 - 24 cars for the Albuquerque / Colorado Springs market, March-April 1968. Some kind of regional promotion.
Looks to be an Albuquerque version of the DSO 22 Calypso Coupe promotion from spring of 1968. The color is Calypso Coral. The ones sold in DSO 22 all were base 289 / C4 coupes with 1A black interior and six digit DSO with blank color code on the door data tag. They all had air conditioning and power steering with AM radio / no console.
Yours has a 3 speed manual transmission and a 1F Saddle interior code which is different than the DSO 22 version. You should order a Marti Report to find out how many other cars were in the order with yours.
My 70 is a special paint color and I had a hell of a time identifying it. Blank block on the invoice, Marti report, and all tags. Finally pulled the rug up and found the build sheet. The color block on it was blank, too. Only clue was in the remarks section: “Hood Fenders WT7194”…which I crossmatched on paintref.com to a 71 ford color with a bizarre name - Green.

According to CBTNs, this is only 1 of 4 with the special order paint and trim code.
Do you know if any of the four are the same color? My Marti shows one of 32 with the same paint/trim codes, but I’m told that could be any special paint color with IDG. I’ma have to pick up CBTN. Sounds like a must have book.
No, I don’t know if the four are the same color and to clear up any possible confusion, I was referring to the '68. Yes, it is a must have to have CBTNs.
Engine207 and 68PUMA, Would you look and see what edition of CBTN you each have, mine is a first edition and matches what 68PUMA has. But I know there have been updates to numbers since the first one was done.

Sorry for the confusion. I dont have one, just acknowledging that it’s a must-have and I need to get me one.
So here is a picture of door jam/inner fender. I believe color to be original. Car had been in storage 25+ years before I bought it. Thought it was pretty cool original dealer trim piece is still on it. I do know it was originally a vinyl top car and was removed.
