Do you Like this Hood Isulation pad?

I’m glad G Dub asked the question because I was wondering the same thing  So with that answered and I really didnt want one anyway i will be leaving mine without. I’ll ditto the “why cover up the paint” :smoke:

You probably heard that tip here. True story!

Must have been. I remember reading it somewhere. I had a good lol.

This mentions not being contoured and may cause wear on the air cleaner. I was wondering that same thing about the ABS liner.
Also, would the ABS burn if there was an engine fire?

The ABS plastic, would probably just melt and deform/sage before catching on fire.

Melted plastic all over the engine compartment sounds like a real treat.

Good observation Al, it is a treat indeed, it’s the car guys version of a “Smores”!!! :buck:

I never have liked hood pads, dusty, dirty, and what do they really do? Is the hood pad keeping things quiet in my convertible? Don’t think so! If anything they make your engine run hotter. I can’t believe they covered up that really nice red hood. If the bottom of your hood looks bad, then yeah, maybe install one of these. But I agree with Jeff, paint the bottom of the hood nicely, and that is the best way to go!

Will this hood pad clear the air cleaner on a big block? My original pad has a recessed area pressed into the pad.

It might help some if it were embossed over the air cleaner. I would not use one, but the idea is good.

I used the ABS hood insulation cover ($88) from QuietRide over a repop insulation pad in my 73 Cougar. The repop was shedding and also scratching the new paint on my air cleaner. Made a cardboard template first of the ABS cover to check if the size and holes matched. The cover is longer than the repop, reaching just forward of the hood latch striker. A few holes did not line up and required adjustments. Trimmed the repop and glued it to the ABS cover, then installed them on the underside of my hood. Had to drill some 1/4 inch holes in the hood frame; also had to slightly raise the hood latch. QuietRide provided 25 small retainer clips, but needed 2 longer ones also. Did this with the hood on the car. The final product looks pretty good, certainly much better than the repop. After a 30-minute ride on a hot sunny day, the middle of the hood was warm but not hot anymore, although the side edges were still pretty warm.

I had gone as far as ordering one of these when they first came out. Even worked with them on the proper running cat logo which looks like they still offer but was not planning on gluing in the installation. Just using the panel.

They were real good about taking it back after i found that there was no way it was going to clear an OE BB air cleaner. Might have been able to cut out a hole for the air cleaner had it been a plan panel but not one that was embossed in the center. Also after seeing the product, just didn’t think it would look right regardless.

However I’ll disagree that there isn’t a market for a good reproduction and I have no doubt someone could sell them even with all the shipping involved. Just never sell enough of them to cover the tooling costs. Thinking a molded pad even if ABS that could still be rolled might be the only way this could happen. But I’m sure Don as well as other vendors have already looked into this much more than I ever would.

I’ve looked in the past to see if anyone has figured out a way to produce these without having to make a large run but never have been able to find such a source.

I agree with the others. I wouldn’t buy it but I guess it would do the job for some folks. I’d rather see my beautiful underhood as opposed to THAT mat but to each his on.

Show that paint and hear that engine!!!

I have tried to order a hood and trunk shield, but hasnt been easy getting communication from them, as im still waiting for comformation that it has been made and shipped.(ordered two weeks ago)
If WCCC had stocked them i would have prefered to buy off them even if it was a wee bit more expensive.
I have more confidence in WCCC than any other supplier to send to NZ .
Mine is for a stock 69 Conv wirh 50 year old paint under the hood so any thing is an improvement lol.
Im looking to have a cruisy street/tourer not a street rod so minimum road noise is a pluss for me.
I really like the concept of the “Under trunk-Underhood” sheilds.
I will report back when i recieve it and fit it.

The black panel looks cheap but I like the idea and the aluminum panels looked nice

The guys at QuietRide visited, measured and such my 71 CJ for the 71 version. Don’t recall them measuring for clearance to the air cleaner but had a full size oem air cleaner installed at the time. They offered me one of the finished products but as of yet have not taken them up on the offer since it didn’t have the look of an original so naked it is for now.

A large sheet of high grade ABS ( esp. if textured ) isn’t cheap. So why wouldn’t QuietRide Solutions have molded the sheet to match the underside contours of the hood ( which also might help to avoid stock air cleaner clearance issues ) ? After all, they pre-cut the heat reflective inserts ( “custom made to each specific application” ) to install into the existing recesses ? Why not go that extra step with the ABS sheet ? It might have made the product slightly ( notice I only said, ‘slightly’ ) more appealing !

You might be able to use heat gun and contour fit it yourself?

After several mailing, i have head from them about my order of a trunk and hood shield and been informed they cant send direct to me in NewZealand because of “brand” licensing with Ford Motor Co .
I can have them with no logos only .
Any body got any ideas to get around this issue, i would love to hear.
Blank ones would not be so attractive i think …

The ABS is cheap but mold building is not. One thing to have molds that will imprint the logos but expanded that out to the whole hood and a different mold would be needed for each application, that would be very pricey indeed.
