Not sure if this is the best place to post hot rod cougar questions, but what the heck. Dropping in a blown 438 in my '68 cougar that will be putting out close to a 1000hp. Clearly I need a better fuel system, and I already have an aeromotive in tank pump and boost referenced regulator, but what I’d really like is a baffled fuel cell with a sump that will drop into place of the factory fuel tank. What’s everybody using that they can recomend in an application like this? Rhodes has one for $500 that is sorta meh, doesn’t even have a sump. I recall some place (fuelsafe?) that had the right setup but they wanted something like $2500 which is ridiculous. Anyways, just asking what everybody else is using, what they like, and see if I can get steered in the right direction. Thanks.
I see that while you’re not necessarily new here, you don’t have a lot of posts. Nothing wrong with that. But bear in mind a lot of things you want to do is way out of the realm of what most people around here do to their cars. Adding wheel tubs and a fuel cell to support 1000 horsepower is quite a stretch for most all of the members here who are not willing to alter their cars beyond what can easily be put back to stock when they want to.
I’m not saying what you want to do is wrong. I actually feel quite the opposite. I’m simply responding as to why you’re getting a ton of views but not any responses. When you ask, “what is everybody using?” I’ll venture a good guess that 99% of the viewers would say, “the stock fuel tank.” Guys simply haven’t done what you want to do so they’re not going to chime in. The experience isn’t there. Wheel tubs aren’t “simple” either for guys who still run 14 and 15" styled steel wheels.
Not trying to run you off. Quite the opposite there too. But I think you’d have better luck finding information and responses to your questions on a more racing geared forum.
Good Luck!
I do love these type of discussions as I love to see these kind of builds being done and the creativity that comes from them but as mark said most here are not on that level of customization. When it comes to custom stuff like this I tend to venture to the mustang sites or protouring type forums to see some different stuff.
For suspension, wheel tubs and parts along that line I use Chris Alston’s products.

I use an Aeromotive 340 stealth tank in my road race Cougar. I don’t have any fuel delivery problems with it and I’m sure it would work for your build.

You really need to add more information on what your doing for a build and the final goal.
Thanks Mark, and everybody else for the feedback, you are of course absolutely right. I should reassure folks here that my XR-7 is still visually stock. The one I’m going a little crazy with is a standard and was a little rough until I started cutting and massaging. BossElim, It has a profab 9 posi rear, triangulated 3 link rear suspension with coil overs that connects the subframes, and all the Shelby mods. Should handle the blown 438 well. Only minor upgrades to the front end at this point. The goal is just a fun, retro racer to pay homage to the '67 Cougar I raced in the 80s and 90s…more straight line drags versus road courses. Although, with the new suspension she corners pretty darn well. Also, thanks for the links, I’ll check them out. I’m a big Aeromotive fan, I use all their stuff in the fuel system for my race truck.
I love those tanks, but was skeptical that it would keep up with my fuel needs so I called aero tech and the fellow just laughed at me, lol. Said no way the pump or -6AN restriction would feed my motor. Which is pretty much what I thought, but figured it wouldn’t hurt to ask. I should probably give up on my fetish of wanting to a drop in tank that will work and not take up my entire trunk and just go with a fuel cell.
Have you looked into the fitech drop in fuel pump, I believe Holly has one also. These fit a modified factory tank.
I have not, I’ll check them out. Thanks!
Just an update, I went with this: https://fuelsafe.com/early-mustang-comple-fuel-cell-enduro-cell/ and opted for the dual in tank Aermotive Phantom pumps that will support up to 1700hp blown. Pretty expensive, but its literally eveything I wanted. Foam, baffles, and a special four trap door baffle around the pickup so I won’t lose fuel from the pickup even if I’m on the wheelie bars. AN10 in and out, as well as extra capacity. A feature I like with the dual pumps that if one goes dead, the other will keep working and get me home. Anyways, I realize this is more extreme stuff that most people on here wouldn’t want but I thought I’d share my outcome for the next guy.
I’m not sure who else would be interested but I’m interested by your project. Can we get some pic’s?
Thanks for the interest. I plan on doing a big build thread in the next couple months, so far I only have this pic on my laptop: CCC Gallery
I already have replaced the rear suspension with the full TCI link coil over rear, with a pro-fab 9" with moly 35 strange axles. It also serves to tie the entire subframe together. Super slick setup.
Full rollerized all billet interals, manual reverse valve body C4 with transbrake dynoed to take up to 1200hp.
Blown max effort 438 (Dart block, all forged internals, AFR Renegade heads, solid roller cam, titanium valves/retainers, etc). Dynoed 1013hp at crank at 15# boost. I’ll get rear wheel numbers from a chassis dyno when I get it tuned. Might end up bumping the boost up a hair just to have four digits at the rear wheels.
871 Blower from Dyers, motor and blower can handle up to 25# boost…can’t even imagine the carnage if I put on the 25# party pulley lol. Actually, the motor is rated to more boost than that, but after 25#s the blower starts working against itself. Procharger would have been a much more sensible choice, but I’ve always wanted a big ol’ hairy roots sticking out of my hood ever since I saw Road Warrior when it came out.
Trans should be here end of week then they can get dropped in. Lots of other stuff, but that’s the drive train for you.
always interested in stuff like this! Im may not go down this road but I love to see custom stuff and the work that goes into it!
Absolutely. I raced a '67 Cougar in the 80’s and 90’s. Then I kind of switched to off road racing and “bounty hole” type events. Have an old Ford highboy that got a bit famous doing that. Embarrassingly, if you google “bad ass ford” the first thing that pops up is a video of my truck from youtube, lol. But, I always missed my Cougar and bought a '68 Xr7 a couple years ago that is more of a mild pro touring Cat. Bought this second '68 standard early last year and sort of going with an updated version of the one I used to drag back in the day.
Oh, and the vid of the truck I was talking about: bad ass ford - YouTube
In any case, I’ll make sure to get lots of pics and do up a decent build thread for the Cat in the next couple months
