Popped up today…

'70 w/ Boss 302, 4-speed. Comp gold with black interior. Replacement block, dealer installed vinyl top. In CA for $48.5k

Dude, you rock. Thanks for taking the time to keep us up to date on Eliminators available. The last Cougar on my “must have” list is a 70 Comp Green Eliminator…perhaps someday.

Thanks for the note of appreciation!

Y’know, there are 2 Comp Green cars on the list
Sure, one of them is currently red, but that can always be fixed in the future. Other one is a project, so you might be able to get it for a good price. Both are sunroof cars too!

Got some pics, marti and info on this one. 0F91G516009
He believes the top was dealer installed based on age and use of factory trim. Marti says it wasn’t sold for 9 months, and given the nice set of options it may have been a demo or dealer driven for that time.
Headliner was replaced at some time. Service replacement block, missing original carb but he has the aircleaner - minus snorkel.
He believes the paint is original, or at least “vintage”, but it has been buffed through on many of the edges and shows dings from age.

Options include console, pb, decor interior, 3:50 traction lok, tilt steering, AM/8-track, tinted glass, Hvy Duty battery.

Both of those are way more than I have to spend for the near future. I already have a 69 Eliminator that needs to get done. However, I don’t really have the space to do it yet. Along with a 69 S code, 70 convert and 70 XR-7, there’s also a few full size Mercs, Ford trucks and other projects on my to-do list. I really shouldn’t be looking at classifieds, but I can’t help myself from watching.

Ok, this CJ 4-speed E-cat has been languishing at $30k for quite some time (I think almost a year now). I know it has poorly patched floors, is missing the Ram-Air bits, and some other engine goodies are non-matching. Ebay listing says “missing smog”, but it is originally a MA car, so I don’t think it should have smog anyhow (AFAIK).
Pics show no rust underneath, but I wonder what’s in the quarters and cowl, being an east coast car.

So, for conversation’s sake (I’m not buying, just thinking out loud), what do YOU think this car should reasonably bring? I think $30k might be a touch high, but $25k-ish would be a reasonable deal. Given the nice list of options this car left the factory with (PB, console, 3:25 traction lok, Ram-Air, AMradio w/ rear speakers, Decor Group, Tinted glass, SS wheels)…

What do YOU guys think?

In 1989 it would be $1400.

Mike,

Yeah, I think 25 or less on the car. From the ebay ad I can’t see too much of the underneath and that scares me. Might be a good car I just can’t tell by the pics. I do not like the Cragars or the little do dads added on. I like these cars bone stock. Just my humble opinion but it shouldn’t come into play if it’s a prospect as those things can easily be changed. It is a big block too. Something to consider. I might ask the guy for more detailed pictures if you had an interest.

Brian

I have some underside pics from an older listing. Most of it looks ok, but like his ad says - the floors are patched. And IMO, they aren’t patched well. At all. So that would be an added cost, eventually replacing the floors correctly. I only have a pic of one torque box but it looks pretty clean. Doesn’t mean the other one is clean too, but it gives one hope
Trunk drop offs look good.
Pics of the quarters look ok, but I would wonder how much patch work is in there…

Heh… $1400…

All of the Q/R codes had smog…& PB (disks in front).

This car is not far from me if a serious buyer needs a personal inspection…

Chris,

I’ll agree with you on the smog, but disagree on the PB, it was an option and not all Q’s and R’s had them.

The only 428 cars that received the PDB mandatory was the 68 CJ Mustang and Torino. Even the Cougar R cars in 68 were a separate option and not an extra cost mandatory option like the Mustang and Torino. Some thought it was a GT thing in 68 but it was not. I collect Marti Reports and if it is not called out it was not installed. Like Dave says by 69 it was an extra cost option and lots of 4 wheel drum brake cars were produced. They were popular with the straight line guys.

Good job Mike ! Always fun to see your post every month !! Appreciate :ylsuper:

Learning all the time - that’s why I love you guys!!! Thanks Dave & Sporty!

I agree! Always picking up some new bits of knowledge. Thanks guys!

Ok, so the Yellow CJ car needs new floors (what, $3k or so?), Smog ($2k?), and Ram-Air / Air Cleaner setup ($3k?)… fudge the numbers a bit and call it $10k in “important parts and repairs”.

Hrm… so “if” you got the car for $25k, put that $10k in work and goodies into it, you are left with a decent driver that is moderately correct, and probably worth about $35k.

Sound anywhere close?

Sure. The orig distr & carb are missing too, but the car runs as it is, and who wants smog anyway? Known history has to be worth something as well…

Ok Brian, I’ll see your 351 sunroof car and raise you a SCJ
