So the factory 302 on my 68 is done for. So my question is should I replace it with a another 302 or step it up to a 351? What are the advantage or disadvantage of each block?
I just replaced my 302 with another 302. I’m not really qualified to answer the question, but that never stopped me before :-). I seriously thought about moving up, but, in the end I figured I’d have less problems and costs just sticking with what was originally there. I also am not dissatisfied with the performance of the 302. It doesn’t lay smoke but it’s fast enough for me. I’m getting to the point where I’m over the speed thrill and actually wanted an automatic. I’ve always had sticks and it just got old shifting. (Yeah I know I’m in the minority here). If I felt like it was under powered, I would have bumped up to the 351, but it’s enough for me and already sucks plenty of fuel. I’m glad I got the new remanufactured engine as I figure I’m good for a long long while. I probably should’ve driven a 351 before I made up my mind. I might have chosen differently.
Anyway, that’s my story. Good luck.
Would you not need the C6 transmission for the 351?
You may not need a C6 or FMX. But it would be a good idea to have the C4 rebuilt and beefed up some. Later 70s 351s came with a C4 behind them.
If you want more cubes, go with a stroker 302—like a 331 or 347. There will be no external visual differences. Plus, the 351 is wider than the 302 because the one inch taller deck height. So, your exhaust won’t line up, some accessory brackets will be different and there are probably other swap hurdles to cross. A few mods to a stroker 302 will give it plenty of pep.
Here’s the deal:
The 351, as you probably already know, will bolt up in place at both the bellhousing and the mounts. But, you will need the accessory drive parts and the right water pump for the Cougar, along with other odds and ends.
If you want an easier route, just put another 302 back in it. If you want more torque and power, then you can do a 351.
Either way, you can stick with a C4 and don’t have to upgrade the trans.
Make your 302 a 347.
Andy saved my having to type the same thing.
