Ever thought about a Tri-Powered Cougar?

I was watching an old Gearz episode when they showed an adapter to put three small base Rochester four bolt 2-barrel carburetors on a v4 intake.

Ok, I’m relatively a noob, so, I’ll bite. What is the benefit of trying to sync/tune 3 smaller carbs, when you can do essentially the same with one big carb? I understand the whole more fuel/more air thing, but how do the threex2’s compare to a big 4v? Not trying to be argumentative, trying to learn, so, learn me! (I imagine “wow” factor would be a hit, too!)

The whole idea just makes me laugh !

It would be unique, that’s for sure. It would make people go wow since nobody else has done it.

EDIT TO ADD: Found this about the Pontiac Tri-Power: The '64 Pontiac 389, 4 barrel, had 325 HP while the tri-power had 348. In '65, the tripower 389 was rated at 360 HP.

23 HP isn’t too bad of an improvement. You would also have better MPG with a tri-power setup as for most driving you would be running a 2 barrel not to mention better throttle response from the low end. Remember, the only carb you would tune would be the middle with the choke so it’s not as hard as some would have you think. The caution is that you use all steel lines so as to not have leaks.

Little GTO.
Three deuces and a four-speed and a 389.
It would be cool.
I believe someone here has a Cat with three deuces.

Right… it’s more high zoot eye candy than anything. But correctly stated, it runs off the center 2 barrel until you put the coals to it.

Personally speaking, I don’t think it looks right on a car that never came with it. An old Vette or on a GTO or hopped up factory Pontiac Bonneville, it looks more at home. And say what you want, but it also goes well on a SBC plugged into an old Deuce Coupe. For me though, I’d rather just deal with a single carb and be done.

I believe it is Jody with “Copycatvert” . I like a tri-power setup for the wow factor. Tuning I not sure how hard that would be.

No,no,no,no,no!!!

I watched that episode as well. I was wondering how restrictive the adapter plate is. It doesn’t seem like it could flow anywhere near as well as using the proper intake. Maybe it doesn’t make any difference. I think there’s a little bit of cool factor to three deuces, but not enough that I would ever use it.

I would suggest if your going to go that way get a real 3tri power manifold.

How many tri-power intakes fit a 302?

I first read that as “old Geezer episode”, thought someone was following me or maybe 'Whatacougar" around with a video camera…

I had a girlfriend in high school that had a mercury monterey s-55 that had the 390 tri-power setup. It used to pull like a rocket-ship throughout the entire rpm range. I have had strong fe’s before, but they didn’t pull like that tri power. I would love to put a tri-power setup on my 289/302, but those inglese and barry grant units are astronomical…so a good 4bbl. does me fine (for now).

one at a time

Nice. :beerchug:

Tripower is all about getting better fuel distribution.
Getting the outboard carbs to sync isn’t that hard, but it does take some know how, whether you use mechanical or vacuum actuation.

I like dual quads, but a 427 tripower 'vette is a beast rowing through the gears and listening to the carbs do their thing. Tripower has its own tonality, which is kind of cool.

I’ve been running three autolites on copycatvert for years and while I can’t say they make the car any quicker, the sound of six v’s at wot is pure music. Initial tuning was a pain but once I got it figured out I haven’t had to touch them except to adjust the choke in spring and fall. Daily driving is almost exclusively done with just the center carb.

Have any sound bites/vids of them running? Would be interested to hear! (not looking to change my setup, but, as they say, curiosity ended the 9th life!)

I’m thinking the adapter plate would be a good way of testing the waters without having to spend another $400 bucks. Maybe port and polish the intake to get more flow and if it didn’t work out you have a freer flowing intake for the 4v. If it works out then you already have all the parts to transfer to the real intake down the road. I would like to know what the flow rates are with the adapter just to see if it is close to a full intake.
