You can post anything else you want.
Like, for example, the fact that you know for certain your car is not the 428 CJ XR-7 GT that Don Nicholson once owned and drove on the strip.

Until I see the verified VIN on ANY black or red 1968 Cougar drag car I cannot rule it out. If you have the VIN share it.
10 minutes left , $17,600
This is a car that money should be no object. It’s a very important car and deserves to be brought back. I’d say brought back to driver quality. Not a show car, make it to race it !!
$26,766
Sold for the price listed above to a 0 feedback bidder (who hadn’t bidded on the car previously). Interesting…
Sold for 26,766.00 Not a bad profit margin. I hope the high bidder is a real bidder and does not try and get out of it. And I hope to see it restored to a high standard.
I hope the winner isn’t an alternate account used to win the auction in an attempt to get around the no reserve format
Well, another 68.5 benchmark $26,766 for a restoration project 1968 Cougar 428CJ 4spd 4:30 Traction Lok Staggered Shock car with NOM engine and trans. It will be very exciting to watch the next chapter in this car’s life.
This bidder is one of those that had contacted me about the car just after the auction started. He stated that he has been collecting 68 CJ parts and already has a few significant Cougars. I will leave it up to him to reveal his identity if he so chooses. Second highest bidder has also already contacted me and said if there is any problem with the first bidder he will bring cash within a few days.
Can someone provide the link to the ended auction? I am too lazy to read 23 pages to find the link…sorry.
Congratulations to buyer and seller!
karguy12: I think you owe Royce, Kevin Marti, and the owner of the green GT-E each an apology and a drink.
Link to original ebay listing:
A drink for sure. An apology, not so much.
Yeah - When you start pissing matches with the very people from whom you are seeking help, that’s not cool.
I doubt I’m the only one here who has a bad taste in their mouths from your snotty posts.
And that’s as polite as I can be.
Agree
Well I am sure that I am not the only one that has experienced the condescending attitude of the Cougar elite. The routine withholding of facts, stats, VIN information and only letting little bits escape when they deem fit. A guy comes out here because he found something cool and wanted to share it and know more about it. Then they jump on you if you are wrong because you are trying to figure it all out. I asked simple and basic questions all during this thread and what you get is silence, half answers or crumbs of info when the answers are known. The overall sentiment that if they have it it is gold, if you have it it is crap. I guess a lot of it has to do with having the upper hand in possibly locating and buying these cars some time in the future. Like the VIN of the black 1968 CJ in Super Stock magazine. Let’s not tell anybody so that they can confirm that this is not their car just in case it pops up and can be bought and then accuse him of commiting fraud because he can’t verify it. I think some of it may just be 4spd envy. So many people with 68 428CJ cars and GTE’s and so many automatics. Multiple people have relayed the exact same sentiment to me regarding the Cougar Elite during this post so it is not just me that observes this behavior.
Either way, I kind of expected that kind of attitude and it sure did present itself. Luckily my automotive tastes are varied and not so make and model specific that I have to be a regular part of it. I don’t take any of this that seriously. For me it is fun and not an obsession. There was however one expert that was kind with his time, communicated with me openly, answered my questions and it was a pleasure to communicate with him. I won’t name you but you know who you are. I thank you.
I love these cars so will make a few comments to help keep the thread more accurate regarding front brakes. The 1968 Mustang 428 CJ 135 series cars are S code apron bucked non GT Fastbacks. They were just simply not optioned with the extra cost Power Disc Brakes like a lot of S code 390 cars in 1968. Nothing to do with having to be “special ordered that way or delete”. The 68.5 Mustang did require the mandatory addition of extra cost Power Disc Brakes. This however is not the case for the R code Cougars. I think it is best to keep all of the 68 R stuff together so when someone really interested in the nuts and bolts of these cars or a sincere interest in saving it can find it in an archive search. Here is a discussion regarding the brake claims prior to the Ebay race car listing start.

Follow me here: There were 244 R code 428 CJ 68 Cougars produced. 37 were GT-Es. All of these included Power Front Disc brakes as part of the GT-E option. This leaves 207 non GT-E CJ Cougars. There were 14 XR7-Gs with the 428 CJ. All appear to have been built with PDB. That leaves 193 CJ Cougars. There were 191 GTs built with the 428CJ (per Phil Parcells). The GT package included power disc brakes. That leaves 2 CJ Cougars that could have possibly notbeen equipped with disc brakes. There is one known stand out, the Border Bandits car that had the GT package and front drum brakes.
I am not sure that I am following your math Bill. How does 244 minus 37 equal 244? I did double check CBTN to see if the 244 number was correct, it is. My math says that leaves 2 possible cars with drum brakes. Please correct me if I am misunderstanding something here.

he did not want to let karguy12 know his ex-car was one of two non GT 428 CJ cats, plus one of one with 4.30 gears
LOL just kidding
The 7.0 Litre GTE Option did include PDB as well as the PS, Radial Tires, Style Steel Wheels on every car. The 68 Shelby’s were also all built with PDB. When a 68 car was equipped with PDB it is called out on the Marti every time regardless, to include these GTE, R Mustangs, and all 68’ Shelby’s.
If it is not called out, the car never left the factory with the option installed. This cooresponds to the invoices. I provided a link to the 428 Reg where we discussed this and it included my own car’s report which is a non GT with PDB. Maybe no one read the attached link within my only post on this Red car thread.
Attached below are 3 reports: 2 for Cougar 500 cars and my Black 4 speed to illustrate my conclusion on the PDB option. Note the GT car does not have PDB but the non GT car does in fact have PDB. Also the Black Border Bandit car was not a GT. I inquired on this prior to visiting the car for a client. Bill Quay told me the car had emblems when they found it so they restored the car with them but not on report. Like I mentioned in the 428 Reg discussion with Karguy I have been tracking this for a while now. The Border Bandit car, Ebay Karguy car and my car are all standard non GT. Mine has the extra cost option PDB and the other 2 cars have drum. There may be only 39 non GT cars but they are a mix of PDB and non PDB builds based on my research of the invoices, Marti Reports and the physical cars themselves match the paper. There are plenty of GT Mustangs as well with no PDB (S/J code) same reasoning. The R code 68 Mustang were like the GTE and Shelby …mandatory equipped with extra cost PDB.
Not the case for the R Cougar is my entire premise here. I suspect the PDB extra cost option was price sensitive on the lower trim level cars.
SORRY one of the reports is not a PDF so it is open but you need to click on my car link and the second Cougar 500 link to open the PDF. Not too good at the computer stuff really
