You were directed to Bill Quay the R code registrar and to Phil Parcells the CCOA registrar, the people that had the answers to your questions yet you never contacted them. Do not say that facts were being withheld when you were directed to to the sources that could give you the best known answers. You trashed the Owl’s head XR-7 GT-E, a car that has been displayed at several of the 50th anniversary shows and is well known to many. You trashed Kevin Marti, a Cougar guy from the very beginning. No one here is obligated to help a flipper find top dollar. You certainly did nothing to make any one want to help you. Then you even lack the decency to actually compliment, by name, the people that did help you. And then you close things out by basically insulting the entire community. Is this the way you want to build your reputation?
This whole thread was a fascinating study of human and car-guy interaction. I’m glad I didn’t get involved in any kind of consortium, but only from a buying perspective, lol. I still say there are a ton of guys here that I’d go into business with…But then again we all know that even the best of intentions can be a bit of a fantasy world, and I’m spent on Cats right now anyway
The language and vibe given out here (by the seller) just pushed me back into reality and reminded me why I like life just as it is. Now, what can I go and drive tonight!?
Bill,
Perfectly said. Factual and with no emotion. Flippers suck in my mind. People who wnat nothing more than to make a dollar. They do nothing for the heritage of the car, nor do they want to drive them or enjoy them. A sad comintary about what the internet has done for the hobby of the people that really love their cars. And then they have the audacity to pulse the people who give a shit to make more dollars flipping a car. This flipper has revealed who he really is.

“Trashed”? After Royce posted a description of the car being about perfect to the point that I thought he was talking about a different car, I posted the FACTUAL condition of that car. If you guys are going to say that my former car would not breach $200k with a correct concourse restoration because it is missing a handful of hidden numerical indentations but that GTE topped $220k because it was so perfect, I HAD to respond. I am still confident that my former car would top $200k without issue and may even BEAT the GTE with all of that “patina”, because some people really don’t like patina, or green paint or tan interiors or want a 4:30 car.
XR7G428 said “You trashed Kevin Marti”. He had the answers to my questions, he KNEW what my questions were, he sent me back a report that did not answer my questions. ALL based on the ORDER of the search criteria. If he had used the search criteria in the CORRECT order, it would have answered my questions. If you went into a restaurant and ordered a hamburger and got a ham sandwich, it may be a good ham sandwich, but it is NOT what you asked for. Is that “trashing” Marti? No, it is a factual statement.
And then there is “Rob” decrying “people that want nothing more than to make a dollar”. You have no idea who I am or what I have done for this car hobby and how many vehicles I have saved and restored. There will be an article about me in a national publication shortly related to the Split Window Corvette. They do nothing for the heritage of the car"? If it wasn’t for me, that Cougar may have rotted into the ground just where it stood. I have discovered and saved vintage 1930’s Lemans race cars, rare speed record cars and unearthed mint low mileage wing cars in my travels. My only mistake was sharing the find with a bunch of Cougar elitists who feel that the only opinion that matters is theirs and the only car that matters is theirs and unless someone gives their car away, they must be a flipper.
I’m off now to save another car. This one is a 1971 GTX that’s been sitting in a backyard for 8 years. I will have a BLAST pulling it out of the weeds, going through it, decoding it (thank God for Fender tags so I don’t have to beg some elitists for info) and getting it cleaned up and running again. When I am done having my fun I will pass it on to someone who will love it and cherish it that really does not know how to find cars like I do and I’ll probably get paid well for my time while having this much fun. Then it will be the 64 Impala SS convertible, 68 XKE Jag, 65 Mustang Vert, and 72 442 waiting for me to get to them. But the next Cougar I may just let rot. Like this one.
I just went back and reread all 26 pages of this thread. I am not sure why you think that you received a condescending attitude from the members here. I only saw a few times where it would even be close and all of those were after you posted a not so nice reply. Every time you asked a question there would be at least one response to that question and in most cases multiple responses. The only time that I saw where you did not receive a direct answer would be for the VIN of the black car in SSDI however plenty of information was presented to show that car is not the same car you were offering for sale. I would like to know why you “kind of expected that kind of attitude”? Do you really have that low of an opinion of the Cougar community? I certainly do not and having spent the past 35+ years as a member of this community my experiences are quite the opposite. I have met a lot of great people over those years and hopefully I will get to meet a few more in the how ever many more years I have left here on planet Earth.
Something to remember is that every time you point a finger at someone there are 3 more pointing straight back at yourself.
Yes, you might be the one who brought this R code Cougar back out into the light of day but you are not the only person out there looking. If you had not found it someone else would have sooner or later. If you decide not to bother with another Cougar that is fine. Someone else will find that one too. Maybe you had better go get all those other cars on your list before that someone else finds them as well. Best of luck with your future endeavors.
OK, just found this. I am Deb Sudlow, I owned the car, bought in Fenton, MI. Brought it to AL. Sold it because there was no shows, no club. Heck, I only have seen maybe 5 67-68 Cougars since I have lived here (moved in 92). Any questions, fire away. I spent maybe $12k trying to get it back, sold it for 1/2 that. I visited the 2nd owner, Danny ? in Pikeville, KY to get the original drive shaft and a few other misc parts for it. He told me about it being a quarter miler.
Awk… what happened to the car??? so sad… I remember every piece I put on it, getting a family run business to put the vinyl roof back on, they did a great job… now it is a wreck… kinda wish I hadn’t have seen the pics… looks like it was rolled and left out to rot.
I saw the car around 1991 I think it was at John’s Cougars in Michigan? If so it was very nicely done. Hard to believe the way it was neglected after you sold it.
Yes, I left it with John while I moved to AL in 92… I really didn’t have a place for it, and I thought maybe he could find a buyer for it. He didn’t, so I had it transported to AL. I showed it at a few shows, but no real fans. Kind of took the fun away, and it sat a bit, had to rebuild the carb from dried out gaskets… luckily there was a race guy in town that did a great job on fixing my inexpert rebuild (it leaked) when the guy from S. Carolina came to buy it. Probably sold it in 1994. So strange to read such a long thread (fuss) about my car. I loved it, I know it wasn’t perfect, but it was the best I could do with the money I had. I knew it didn’t have the orig. engine, because it had a 302 in it when I bought it! I found a 1969 428 for it, had it rebuilt. Gack, that looked horrible. I hope that whomever bought it will fix it up so I can put the awful neglect pictures out of mind!! There is a guy here who has what appears to be an eliminator convertible, with NO TOP. It sits outside with a tarp over it. I don’t know if it is a real Eliminator (69) or not… never found anyone there to talk to. Oh, and when the car was silver, it did have a black strip up the hood. When I had it repainted, I did not find anything to say that was original or not, so I didn’t put it back. I guess I should have. There is a lot more information out there NOW than when I was working on it! And someone thought to add the spoiler… I didn’t have proof that it originally had one, either.
