Found R-Code 1968 Cougar Today

Hi Deb,
Just an FYI, the Eliminator package was never offered on a convertible. All Eliminators are coupes.

I put several images in my gallery here. I will add a few here that I think may be of interest.

This is a photo that Danny Stanley gave me when I visited him, looking for car history and original parts. Sorry the photo is so bad, but I had a flood in my house at one time… There was NO spoiler at that time, I figure it was in the 70s.

Good. Then I won’t be tempted! I am sure it is a mess… Thank you!

Deb

Pretty much as I got it, except the engine was out while the 428 was getting rebuilt for it.

After most of the restoration.

Engine bay.

Dash/Interior.

Last one unless requested…

Ready for paint.

Thanks so much for taking the time to post the pictures!

That is/was/could be again, an awesome Cougar.

Please post more if you have them.

Hopefully whoever owns it now finds this thread will all these past pictures. This would be a great resource to them along with knowing the history.

2nd try of the engine bay.

More pics (since you asked)

Work in progress.

That is about all the picture of the car I have. In various stages of work. I think that the worst part of knowing the state of the car currently is that I spent HOURS of time and plenty of money (as well as friends’ time) finding NOS parts where possible and looking for the best stuff to bring it back. Before the internet, we searched through dealership inventory lists to find things like an NOS truck lock and trim, rocker panel moldings… Had to phone call/network to get the right carb, the ram air gasket ($400 – that one was hard to find!), the closest I could find engine from a guy who raced Fords, he had a Pinto with a big block in it! … and junk yards, and … and… so on.
Somewhere you guys got me mixed up with someone else. I lived in Fenton, then Holly Mi. I never lived in Holland. And I never have lived in N. Carolina and NEVER wrote for any papers except short stuff for the performance Ford Club in Detroit and the CCOA article. Purchased the car not knowing what it was, then I started researching the VIN, realized that it was special, and vowed to do my best to only put on the correct parts on it. It had a 302 and a C4 tranny on it, but I found the clutch petal under the carpet. I consulted with a bunch of Ford folks to try and get the details right as best as I could. I had it until about 1994-95, when I sold it to a guy from N. Carolina. I never heard from him, so I assumed he was enjoying the car. I felt that letting the car sit in my garage wasn’t doing it any good. I regret that now. This really was a trip through time. I had a lot of good times and met a lot of good folks showing this car in MI, meeting up in Holland and Dearborn…and at the Car Barn… Jerry Schollenberger was a huge help finding and installing parts. My friend, neighbor and mechanic Eddie Coleman in Holly put most of the major mechanicals in for me and helped with a lot of other stuff. So many friends that I have lost track of. I hope I am not boring y’all with this, but I have to work through the sadness of seeing it so neglected.

Not boring at all - again, thanks for taking the time to locate and post the pics.

Most everyone on this forum are here because we are Cougar enthusiasts and this is an important Cougar.

You have provided invaluable information about this car to whoever ends up with it.

I’m hopeful it will be resurrected again at some point.

I wonder how many Cougars have lived to go through 2 restorations.

Anyone who is bored is on the wrong site. Thanks for posting all the great vintage photos.

Something else I remembered about the car is when I got it the odometer said something like 47K miles. Based on the lack of wear on the seats, steering wheel, pedals, etc., I felt like that was the actual miles on the car. Of course, put on a 1/4 of a mile at a time!

Great to have a chapter in this cars life laid out - thanks for sharing and posting the pics- this has been an interesting read !!
