I’ve been looking around at fuel injection myself. Have you looked in a Holley Pro-Jection kit? They seem to be relatively cheap on e-bay. My 1975 Ford C-700 bucket truck has an FT-330 engine and I think the Pro-jection would be a good option on it.
If you want to spend about 2 grand, the MSD Atomic EFI looks pretty nice. So does the FAST EFI kit. I just started looking last night, so I am not armed with much info yet.
Honestly…I wouldn’t much look at TBI, unless you’re just looking for a quick bolt on deal so you can control your fuel and spark. They’re relatively inefficient (despite marketing claims…a well tuned carb almost invariably out powers them, while getting better mileage), and are prone to distribution issues as well.
I am going to be using EFI on my car also, but I’m going with a Megasquirt MS3x unit from http://www.diyautotune.com. I need the top of the line MS3 for various reasons (I’m running 16 injectors, for one…lol)…but if I were just wanting more efficiency with a bit better power and mileage (and all the other benefits of EFI), I’d do a MS1 or MS2 setup, for a LOT less money. It’s far more versatile than most of the other aftermarket stuff on the market these days, for a lot less money.
Just keep in mind the EFI aftermarket is so full of BS marketing gimmicks its not even funny. Just keep your eyes open, and do some heavy reading over on places like speedtalk, yellowbullet, etc…and you’ll figure it out. I know you may not be racing…but the concepts are very much the same when applied to an efficiency standpoint versus a horsepower standpoint!
I looked around for info on this and thought I was some sort of pioneer for thinking of such an idea until I was directed to this site (http://www.binderplanet.com/forums/showthread.php?t=47254) from someone on GarageJournal. I really wanna inject the Cougar but my budget for such a thing is, well, small. Check out this site and go thru it, very informative! I will be going this route for starters and already started collecting parts!
My only experience with gm throttle body injection has been on factory gm vehichles. My opinion on it is that a carb is cheaper, easier to tune, cheaper to tune, and I found that system to be really no better than a properly set up carb. I would hate to add the extra head ache with wiring and fuel injection without seeing the gains. I’d stay carb or go to a newer fuel injection
