In tank fuel pump

Sitting here at work with some time on my hands I got to thinking - would it be possible to put an electric fuel pump in the tank of my XR-7 while maintaining the low fuel level sensor?

I think the pump would be easy enough to attach to the pickup tube, however, the question is how to get power to the pump?

So I did a little digging online and found this:

There might be enough space on the mounting flange of the sending unit to mount two of these to power the pump.

What do you guys think?

Is there a better way to get power through the mounting flange?

I’ve never seen a submersible fuel pump that produced low enough pressure for a carbed engine. Those are designed for efi where fuel pressures on the 30-40 psi range are commonplace as opposed to the 4 or 5 that a carb takes. You’d definitely need some sort of regulator unless efi is in your future as well.

With that said, your link is a nifty little gadget that I’ll keep in the back of my mind should I find myself in that situation.

Yeah, I’m thinking about EFI. I checked the price to ship those little things and it isn’t cheap.

Ford CFI systems circa '83-'84 used two pumps. A low-pressure in-tank pump and a high-pressure external pump. The in-tank pumps produced 6-8 psi, IIRC. A little bit high for a carb, but easily handled by a regulator.

The Aeromotive tank is another option.

I’ve been eyeing up the Spectra EFI tank for my future switch to fuel injection:

The advantage of this one is the pump/sender assembly mounts under the car where the stock sender would be. So there’s no wires/fuel lines/bulkhead fittings in the trunk.

Another option is FiTech has a pump that you mount in your factory tank. It does require a hole to be cut and fuel lines in the trunk though. I bought one but have not installed yet. I will say also FiTech has very good customer service or at least very prompt answering questions.
