I just bought my replacement headlight bucket so I think I’ll install these LED’s along with an electric conversion. Might as well just tear into it once.
I contacted their customer support and they were recommending the 30W. I was concerned with fitment into the buckets. They provided me with the exact dimensions. I ended up with the OE5 LED w/Original Glass
OE5 LED with Original Glass — Dapper Lighting? They are similar to the 575 but take up a little less room in the back of the light. All 4 lights are able to do low/high beam. I did a little write up when I installed them in 2022, the link is below. I can provide additional photos if you need them of how they fit now. They were basically plug and play. No modifications to the light harness or relays.
I’ve got the 7" Holley Retrobrights in “classic white” in my 1960 Land Rover and they are fantastic. Color is bang on for a halogen, they draw half the current so relays are not necessary, and have a really solid beam pattern with a nice cutoff. Not a razor sharp cutoff like a projector lens, but a well defined cutoff that makes them easy to aim and avoid blinding traffic.
They are on the list for the Cougar but not as necessary because the Land Rover does all my bad weather driving in the dark/snow/rain of the PNW. Perfect drop in replacement that fit in my headlight buckets, no fans to worry about, no big heat sinks or fins, no separate driver modules to hide. Truly one of the few aftermarket parts I’ve purchased that I’ve been 100% happy with.
I cant imagine with the light pattern they show that those would be very good. I have seen the Holley Retrobrights in person and they look pretty good and are bright but look “natural” in the way they cast light. West Coast Classic Cougar has some Octane lighting stuff but the fitment is tight on the 69-70 stuff. it fits good in the 67-8 models.
The Holley version has my interest as well. Not cheap but they appear to do it right when it comes to a led retrofit.
I too am not a fan of the fans, bad patterns, high color temps, adaptors and all that.
67, Is that photo with high beams or low beams? I’m looking for a set for my 71 but if the low beams blind everyone I dont want to get those. If these are low beams did you perhaps mix-up the high beam lenses/bulbs in with the low beams?
Picture is of the low beams. I’m not aware there is any difference in the light bulbs or housings between the high and low beams. They are a 360 degree bulb in a reflector style housing. They are in your face bright. You’ll get temporarily blinded if you look directly into them, yes. They do exactly what I wanted them to do!
I’m not sure it was a mistake, but my led octane kit came with 4 bright white halogens, also. I was a bit confused at first because it’s not advertised in the listing.
Either way, I won’t be using them because I don’t have the halogen relay kit.
I priced the Dapper lighting, at 175.00 each! The Octane set of four, for two hundred seems a very fair price- but the review for the Holley product is a very strong recommendation. Still some more research to do but this has been a very helpful thread!
The Octane lights come with halogen bulbs installed, but also LED bulbs to be installed. It is very easy to change the bulbs to LED before putting in the new headlight assembly.
Steve
The Octane kit only includes the LED bulbs at least the four kits that I bought.
Thanks for showing this- I see the tabs you cut off there. Do they fit more flush? Do you need to dress the area with a file or similar after you cut them off?
I’ve been running the Holley RetroBright LED headlights for almost 3 years. They are so much brighter than Halogens. They have a 3000K color temp so they are as white the Halogen in my 2025 vehicles. These look like standard headlights rather than the odd lenses in many LEDs. They mount just like a standard headlight.
They don’t fit more flush but those tabs would make contact with the bucket behind the light.
With it making contact it would not allow the light to secured in a level orientation. Meaning the word ‘octane’ in the center of the lens would not be level.
It was also more difficult to get that 2nd screw (in the retaining ring) lined up with its receiver hole.
While it’s fresh in my memory still, I’d like to suggest putting electrical tape on top of masking tape right under the retaining ring hole, on the rock guard. That edge on the retaining ring hole is super sharp and will cut right through JUST masking tape, scratching up your beautiful rock guard.
I took my cat for a run up the mountain 2 nights ago, for the last time this year. I was reminded how well I like these and they actually worked great for how often and where I’m using them.
I did turn them down a bit, to not blind oncoming traffic, too bad. Thing is…the brights are so incredibly bright, when I dim them, there’s no question, to oncoming traffic, that I did that. So, I’ve never been brightened.
Oops…I forgot to say, I didn’t file anything. I don’t believe that part makes contact, anymore.
In order to be more clear…
I would hook the spring to the retaining ring after the light is plugged in. Then placed the light in the ring. It appears the front glass portion of the light is tight up against the stainless steel retaining ring.
The light will not push back into the bucket with the ring secured in place so I’m not certain those sharp edges from the cut tabs are up against the bucket. But, I don’t believe they are. I believe it is the top outer edge of the light that is being ‘sandwiched’.
Which in second thought
… your statement of them fitting more flush, makes perfect sense now. Thanks
Royce did you have to make these modifications?
Seriously dude…why would you ask him to come back here to validate MY experience with these lights?
A person doesn’t have to modify them. It just makes them fit better.
You said they came with halogens installed but included led bulbs as well? I wonder if the lens are cut for the halogens and not led thus giving you the light patters you have?
Thanks for the photos. I really need to upgrade my lighting. Its like Im driving by candle sticks!
Thanks….i was just thinking yesterday, how you have usually been the voice of reason around here. Thanks so much for that!
