List your top 10 Cougars 67 through 73

It is hot and stinky as the underside Satan’s tail around here.

The up coming sale of the '68 XR-7 GT-E 428CJ 4 speed has me dreaming about ultimate Cougars.

How about picking the top 10 Cougars on your wish list.

Here are the suggested rules:

You can specify any set of options you want, so long as the combination was actually built in at least 1 instance. That means such a Cougar must actually exist.

So my number 1 is easy '68 XR7-G 428 CJ 4 speed sunroof

After that it gets harder…

What wold be on your list?

Ok i’ll belly up to the bar :beerchug: and put my chips on a 1971 black 429 XR7 Vert. :smoke:

I’ll take the only 68 GTE 428 Sunroof car built.

Well, gee, let’s see, would you believe Cougar 1?

DOH! Cougar 1 would have to be on the list!

The '71 XR-7 Convertible J code 429 Ram Air 4 speed would also have to be on my list. Oh my… only 5 built.

I don’t know who would want that old thing.

Yeah - you’d have to enter it in the modified class - too many changes over a factory build

I’d have a 302 4 speed sunroof XR7-G in madras blue with white top, a/c, defrost, cruise control, 8 track(not sure if it was available with 4 speed) (restored by John Benoit with the Cat Ballou modifications and a T5)

or

Competition Blue 1970 Eliminator, black comfort weave, 428, ram air option, power windows, cruise control interval wipers, a/c, traction lock, rear defrost, am/fm, console, tilt, seat back release, tinted glass, passengers side mirror (I know), styled steel whiles, raised letter tyres

or

1969 XR7 Convertible, 351-4V, bright blue poly, blue leather, competition suspension, 4 speed, a/c, power windows, cruise, tilt, interval wipers, console, white top, styled steel wheels, dealer fitted front spoiler,

Surely someone must have ordered a 67 xr7 289 4 speed with the 8v induction setup. Can I have that?

A White 1968 427 XR-7 with out the GTE package…If not that then a Black 1970 Boss 302 Eliminator AND it’s 428CJ twin.

Ok here is my list.

  1. My Grandfather’s 1967 Jamician Yellow Standard 289 A/C
  2. HF II’s 1967 XR7S
  3. Cougar #1-#6
    4.1968 White 427 A/C (The Unicorn)
  4. XR7G 428 4 Speed (Bill’s Car)
  5. XR7G Hertz Sunroof
  6. XR7G J Code
  7. 1967 390 A/C
  8. 1968 1/2 R Code 4 speed A/C
  9. 1969 Ram Air 428 4 speed Convertible.

Three on the list are covered

Steven

I would just like to have my first Cougar back. 1968 XR-7 with 302, 3-speed stick, Augusta Green over Saddle with no vinyl top.

1968 XR7-G R code 4 speed, Maroon/Red, TW, A/C, PS, PB. Sunroof, white vinyl top, SS wheels.
1968 Standard - 302-4V - 4 speed, bench seat, Augusta Green/Black, convenience option, disc brakes, style steel wheels, no vinyl top. - Daily Driver.
1968 XR7 GT-E W code, Augusta Green/Saddle, TW, PS, PB, console, SS wheels.
1968 XR7 GT-E R code, 4 speed, Nordic Blue/Parchment, TW, AM/FM, console, A/C, SS wheels.
1969 Boss 429 Eliminator - White of course.
1969 XR7 convertible, 351-4V auto, Black Jade/White, TW, AC, PW, PS, PB, Speed control, AM/FM, SS wheels.
1969 Eliminator R code 4 speed, Yellow/White, GT wheels, console, 3.50 gears, PS, PB.
1970 Eliminator Boss 302, Competition Green/Black Decor, 4.30’s, console, sunroof, PB.
1970 Eliminator 428CJ RA, 4 speed, Competition Green/White Decor, TW, PW, A/C, AM/FM, console, SS wheels.
1971 XR7 convertible J code automatic, Black/White, console, PW, TW, AM/FM, power seat, SS wheels.

Much like '67 S Code, I’d love to find my Dad’s ‘67 Jamaican Yellow 289 with 3-speed on the floor, standard black interior and no power-nothin’.

I too would love to just have my original Cat back.

If you had not put the year limit on the question my first choice by far would be the prototype 2 seater - the Cougar II

Hmm… I think any of these would be in my top 4.

  1. 1970 Eliminator, sunroof, 428SCJ, 4speed, ram air, Comp yellow, black decor interior.
  2. El Gato, 1970 concept / show car.
  3. 1969 Eliminator prototype ~ sunburst orange, 428CJ, auto.
  4. 1969 Eliminator, R-code, 428SCJ, 4speed, Competition Orange, White interior, W-code / 4.30 rear axle ratio.
…jeez, do I have to come up with 10? LOL!

I guess if Scott has one of the '69 Boss 429 Eliminators, then I’ll take the other one, LOL!

Yes, I would love a GT-E, or an XR-7G as well, so consider a few of those on my list too.

Would also need some convertible action, and I like the styling of the '71-'73 drop tops, so call it a '71 convertible, 429CJ, 4-speed (did they make any of those? I forget…).

  1. GT-E XR-7 427 4 speed (fantasy)
  2. XR-7G 428CJ 4 Speed
  3. Boss 302 Eliminator 4 speed
  4. '69 or '70 CJ 'Vert 4 speed
  5. '67 GT XR-7 4 speed

Surely something like this belongs somewhere on the list:

Just a super nice all-original grabber green 1970 convertible with white comfortweave interior. Michael Kwok owns this car and was kind enough to let me & Don drive it to the BBQ after the CCOA show in June. Drove like a brand-new car, didn’t squeak or rattle once. Lest we forget that even base-model Cougars can be really great cars.

I took a bit of a different approach. And yes, all these Cougars do exist. In no real particular order:

  1. Cougar 1 simply because it was the first.

  2. CatVert’s Vert because it was so well done.

  3. Brian Aust’s Red GTE so I can own the most expensive Cougar that I’ve ever seen sell.

  4. ECI Bob’s 69 because it would come with THE MOST extensively detailed build information.

  5. Any of Leon’s fleet so I can have one that is right-hand drive.

  6. Drag Boss’ crazy wheelstander for obvious reasons… although I think I heard this one got crashed not too long ago.

  7. Chris Gauch’s Yeller 69 so I can own a TV star.

  8. Jan Ove’s 68 because there is no way in hell I’ll ever be able to paint that nice.

  9. My own Hero because, lets’ face it… I’ve owned this car longer than anyone else I know. So I can’t imagine life without it.

  10. T3’s Heap so I can have a daily driver :poke:

All of mine have been taken -

4 speed, Cobra Jet, sunroof G.
El Gato
Cougar II on the Cobra chassis (as Jeff said, technically doesn’t fall within the years allowed)
The XR7-S built for Henry Ford II
And which ever Cougar this was that was photographed at Gurney’s All American Racers shop in '67
