Looking for 67 or 68 Cougar with a 390

I am currently looking for either a 67 or a 68 Cougar that has a 390 in it with a manual transmission. Preferably in a light blue. I have been looking all over the internet for one and am not having much luck.

Less than 3% of the 67’s and just over 1% of the 68’s had the 390 with manual transmission. So that is going to be a tough find in any color. But you are looking in the right place, and there are people on here that can offer good advice on converting to a manual transmission too. Good luck!

I think you’ll need to monitor the various sites (Facebook marketplace, classiccars.com, Bring A Trailer, marketplace on this site, etc.) until one pops up. It’s going to be difficult in finding a clean one in the exact configuration you want….especially a 390 4 spd as Calicat mentioned.

RC333 I have what you are looking for but it is a project. 68 XR7 390 s-code 4-speed. The car was purchased from the original owner and is fairly complete. It was a northern car so it does have rust in the typical places but does include spare fenders, doors and hood. Let me know if you are interested and we can talk about the details further. The car is located outside of Charlotte, NC. Price is $6500

Such a beautiful car! I will bite….How much are you asking for it?

Rob

I have just started looking. My dad had a 67 with a 390 when I was much younger. I would have been 4 when it was new. He sold it in 73 or 74 and has regretted it ever since. He is now 82 and wishes he still had it. I am wanting to get one for the both of us. If I could find one and let him drive it until he cannot drive, it would mean the world to him. It would then stay in the family. Thanks for replying. I know this will be a difficult find but I just got started and will take any advice or help that I can get.

Hi Rob,my friends who know my past restorations love this car and have said it needs to go back to it’s land of origins. It would be a fitting chapter to be with your family.Since making the decision to sell I have had a lot of interest here in the UK.If it was a 67 big block mustang there are many in this country who would grab it in a heartbeat as they are universally well known.Cougars are so rare it’s not until it is seen in the flesh it attracts so much attention and interest.
I do not know, over the long years I have owned this,of any other in this spec in the UK or even Europe.I have had offers and a dealer who wants to sell it on consignment. One guy in particular has asked me to give him until just after Christmas to give me a definite answer on a value I would be happy with. However it’s not sold until sold.Perhaps the cougar community here could help with a ball park figure as I know there would be imports and the exchange rate which would be a big factor to you?
Kind regards
Paul

My advise is, but the stunning Glacier Blue cat shown here and never look back. You could spend then next 20 years looking for a light blue 390 4 speed car and still not find one. Your father isn’t getting any younger.

OK I will do my research into importing and exchange rate. How much are you wanting for the car?

I agree on all of what you said. It is a stunning car.

Hi Rob,
I would be happy for the first firm offer of £49K
I know the exchange rate and shipping ramps up the purchase cost and completely understand it may not be possible when all things considered.
I have bought a couple of cars from the USA myself in the past but the exchange rate was very favourable to me at that time which made it possible.
There is no pressure or hurry,as I said I have a guy over here trying to make up his mind after Christmas.
I expect the cougar community here will give their valued opinions as to the market value of my car if it’s about right or not.
Kind regards
Paul

I’ll chime in. I own a similar car to the one above, although mostly cosmetically unrestored with original paint and original interior, except for headliner. The car mechanically front to back is all restored original or brand new. The car is a bit of a patina rat cat. I wouldn’t even consider an offer below $35k for it.

The price that came to mind when I saw the Glaicer blue cat was $50K USD. You certainly cannot build it for that price

67 or 68 - nope

manual trans - nope

390 - nope

But it IS a pretty blue!

I can’t stop gawking at that beautiful 67 GT that 67xr7390gt has for sale across the pond. I’m not sure what the tariffs and shipping will look like, but you couldn’t do that nice of a restoration for what he is willing to sell it for.

I have been looking at shipping costs. Do you have a preferred shipper over there? Everything is pointing to about 4k door to door.

Any input?

Rob

Hi Rob,
It’s not something I have regularly done.
The only times I have used shipping agents was when I imported 2 vehicles many years ago for my own personal use.First was a classic 1963 split screen corvette in the late 80’s and the last time was 21 years ago,a brand new 2004 Dodge Ram Rumble bee.I was helped by the corvette owner and the Dodge dealership on those occasions.
If you find one that needs looking into in the UK I would try and help any way I can.
Regards
Paul
