Manual transmission lockout

Anyone here know a lot about the TKO 500 trans?
I’m looking for some sort of a lockout for the overdrive.
My transcript has a habit of wanting to grab 5th gear/overdrive when speed shifting to 3rd… looking for a shifter that would lock this gear out .

Not sure about any such shifter. I hope someone else can chime in. In the meantime, I will research it. I had the same problem w/my first 5 speed trans. It seems the pattern is a little closer on a lot of them vs. the old 4 speeds. I would just give it time and get used to the pattern.

Ditto on the getting used to it. I recently picked up a 6 speed car, and kept jumping 3rd for 5th…from SECOND! Couple weeks in now, the pattern is now muscle memory. Definitely tighter than the old toploader!

No need to be ashamed…UNLESS you got some $hitbox, econocar, pizza delivery vehicle, slapped some rims on it & are trying to convince us all that it’s cool.

It is best “fixed” by operator training. The shifter will go the the second gate all by itself when leaving 2nd gear. It is the operator deliberately making that lateral movement which causes problems. I have done it myself with my TKO-600 a few times but now it almost never happens since “the operator” knows how the trans works a little better.

The stangs were using transmissions by the name of Getrag, dunno if that holds until the present day.

E-Bob is correct, it is a Getrag MT84. '13 GT Mustang, had it about a month now, and it’s a hoot.

Now back to our regularly scheduled original post…

I still say using it will get the kinks worked out of missing gears.
