Mr. Accident Prone Checking In...

It’s always something I tell ya!

Last Saturday my wife and I got down to starting the spring commissioning on our boat (2006 Sea Ray 340 having two inboard Merc Horizon 8.1s engines). Regular stuff for this time of year (for us anyway).

Except that Diann was working on the forward topside using Clorox Cleanup and rinsing sparingly with a few gallons of water we had scrounged up (no water on in the marina yet). Me?, I was finishing putting up the canvas and eisenglass, touching up a few chafed spots with RIT Navy Blue dye (another, long, story).

So I hopped up onto the gunnals and was doing my thing, not really noticing that the fiberglass by my feet was wet with the Clorox solution (apparently quite slippery when combined with rubber shoe soles).

So next thing I know I am trying (unsuccessfully) to slow my decent (about 10-12 feet to the ground) using the boats VHF antenna.

Apparently, it hurts pretty badly when you shatter your femur into five pieces, I was unconcious (and unaware what had happened to me) until just before the ambulance arrived. Was in the hospital from Easter Sunday until last Wednesday and have been at an in patient rehab ever since. Hope (hoping anyway) to go home by this weekend, about two weeks from when it happened. I had no idea that breaking a single bone (albeit the biggest one) in ones body could have such profound effects!

Holy crap, Bob. Get well soon.

(when’d you upgrade to the 340? Thought you had a sailboat?)

Hope you feel better soon Bob!

Five pieces…holy crap that’s painful just thinking about it! There goes your summer plans. Get well soon.
On the bright-side you can speed around Carlisle in one of those cool motor scooters and beep your horn at everbody.

Bob I hate to hear about accident. As bad as it was I’m glad it wasn’t worse. Saying a prayer for a speedy and safe recovery.
Steven

Bob, get well soon! Sorry to hear that you suffered such an injury. How long have they estimated before the leg is healed?

Clutch leg or go pedal? Maybe you can swap in an automatic for the duration of recuperation. How many plates and screws did they use? Did they let you shop for best price on those parts?

Kidding aside… hope your recovery is speedy and complete.

Left leg Rob and no intentions to make any changes. I am working on weight bearing as we speak. Although nasty, it is a feat (no pun intended!)

3-5 months to heal Bill.

Was always a 340 Todd, but had and sold a 290 prior. We also do like to sail out of BVI and the like.

Ewwwww…that’s gotta hurt. Be thankful you didn’t shatter your knee cap like my wife did a couple of years ago. She still doesn’t do stairs well.
Glad to hear you are recovering nicely! Don’t over do it, and get well at the pace your body will allow.

Well, in the spirit of “good humor”, and “keeping your spirits up”…the pic of the rod on MCN…looks sorta like Cougar strut rods…yeah? “Dah-dah-dah-dah!!! Super ECI!!! Part engineer, part ECI, part Cougar!!! Here you come to save the day!!!”

Cool on the 340…looking at a 240 “Overnighter” now for lake use…cabin is getting too small for the whole family anymore…

Continued healing…

Sorry to here about your mishap Bob, hope your time to recovery goes by quick. John

Bob
Holy hell. Get better soon. That sounds totally crazy.
Bill

Well Bob, as you usually say, “if you’re going to do something, might as well do it right the first time”.

as far as breaking a leg, you probably should have held back just a tad…

at least, it shouldn’t be as bad as your back.

take care

Jean

Very sorry to hear about your misfortune! I hope you can continue to give us Cat lovers your experience and advice while you convalesce.

Why is it that I expect to see a new thread where Bob fires up the welder and starts “restoring” his leg?

Why that would be because you truly understand what an ECI is about Bill!

Is/Are there any rules about excessive bondo in a human leg restoration? Will you go with pin stripes or flames?

Ouch! Sorry to hear about that. Get well soon, and try to stay safe from here on out, ok?

Well that’s all well and good in theory Mike, but let’s be realistic! This is me we’re talking about! By way of example, let’s just look at the period of time involving the restoration of Isabel. During that time I shattered my wrist working on our awning one fall, a plate and a dozen or more more screws on that. Then Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) of C5/C6 and C6/C7 in my neck about 4 years ago. Now this. Not sure why, but I would say that I seem to be accident prone!

Anyway (in my usual photodocumentation style), thought you guys might like to check out my latest “project”!:

The recovery is going well. Today my wife and I traipsed all over Home Depot (me pushing a walker!) so I could pick up some mortar to repair our front stairs where the lower railing attach points are, then grabbed a length of 2" PVC for a return line repair on our pool, apparently water backed up the return line to the PVC ball valve, froze and blew the valve apart. Think I understand what happened, hopefully I can prevent it from happening again in the future. Plenty of spring projects to do but the “house slave” is moving a bit slow this year. Having said that, everyone including the docs are fairly impressed with what I am doing just two weeks after F’ing myself up in a big way!

Ouch Bob, as if the story of the fall wasn’t bad enough those pictures sent shivers up my neck ! Gods speed on the road to recovery :smoke:
