New 1968 - 1970 Cougar Dual Exhaust Hangers

I will soon have available new 1968 - 1970 Cougar dual exhaust hangers. These hangers are made from new tooling to exactly match the originals. All the metal parts are stamped and formed, just like the originals. Nothing laser cut. The rubber is tire sidewall, just like the originals. As you can see in the photos, they are not the same as Mustang hangers. The top of the muffler hangers are considerably different, and the bottom has different hole spacing than Mustang. The rear hangers are Mustang on one side, and a mirror image on the other side. The rivets were made from scratch to exactly match the originals as well as the backing plates.

I should have them available for sale in a few weeks.

Thanks,

Scott Fuller

Looks great! Now, wasn’t someone making correct (to my knowledge anyway) hangers at one point? SMS Auto or something like that? I remember speaking with Tom Lawrance about this (and he said he sent some place NOS hangers and never saw them again) and he was surprised that MU was selling correct parts (I believe) at one point (where I got mine).

MU?

Mustangs Unlimited

Great new product!

They look very nice and correct Scott. definitely a nice addition to the Cougar repo inventory of parts. should the p-side rubber hanger have white rubber belting? The original exhaust on my XR7G has white on the P-side muffler hanger. I don’t recall if it was white on the 69 original exhaust. I would have to look.

Scott, are the hangars going to have white rubber on the aft side of the forward hangar like the assembly line parts did?

Can’t wait to get the hangers and new exhaust for my 69 cj. I want to thank Scott again for the extra effort to get them ready for me for the show.

I’ve seen hangers with partial white, all white and no white. I believe it depends on where they where cut from on the side wall.

Arild

Arild is right. Some had white sidewall and some didn’t. I have many original hangers with no white on them, like the ones in the photos I posted. Same is true for Mustang hangers.

Scott

Can I get a set with one white one?

This is wonderful stuff. On my '68, which had original 3-18-68 dated muffler on the driver side, I had the wider Mustang hanger, which matched the muffler 's tabs. The passenger side had what must be the Cougar width. “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,” or one of those other things we learned in high school.

They recycled old tires to get the rubber, random cuts out of side walls, so considering much of the supply they were recycling would be about 10 years old of course one in 20 might be white wall. If you got in touch with Coker I bet you could in time end up with some bum tires to cut up. Just finding one set of four take offs would make quite a few strips, rarely have I seen more than two on a car that were made from a wide white. Those look spot on , Dave at precision exhaust and others have “planned on” making correct hangers for the Cougar but it has never been done to my knowledge.

Original Cougar hangers had hole spacing as shown. Mustangs were 5.25-inch on both driver and passenger side.

Scott

I had them flipped in my story, yes, wider one is on passenger side…

Don,

If you have occasion to speak with Kurt at KTL, ask him. I know Tom sent some place NOS ones to make repro’s from, maybe that never happened but I believe I bought correct ones from MU (and Tom was surprised when I told him about it).

I’ll have to make a quick measurement of the dimensions Scott provided, that should help clear this notion of mine up.

Just to be clear, I don’t have the hangers in question.

Scott

Nice work, Scott.

Bob: I don’t think anyone made “correct” reproductions. I remember spending time looking for OEMs (ca 2007) and would have bought repros if they were “good enough.” I was frequently visiting MU.com during that time (and WCCC, M+, Mansfield, et al.). I don’t recall having the option. Are they different for CJ’s?

Thanks

Hi Rob,

Yes, you are correct, I just measured mine, they are 5.25" spacing between the bolts, so mustang.

Scott,

Are the top metal bracket pieces the same between mustang and cougar?

Thanks for another correct cougar part!

Robert

Robert,

No, the top piece is not the same as Mustang. Here is a comparison between the Cougar hangers and the Mustang hangers.
