I will soon have available new 1968 - 1970 Cougar dual exhaust hangers. These hangers are made from new tooling to exactly match the originals. All the metal parts are stamped and formed, just like the originals. Nothing laser cut. The rubber is tire sidewall, just like the originals. As you can see in the photos, they are not the same as Mustang hangers. The top of the muffler hangers are considerably different, and the bottom has different hole spacing than Mustang. The rear hangers are Mustang on one side, and a mirror image on the other side. The rivets were made from scratch to exactly match the originals as well as the backing plates.
I should have them available for sale in a few weeks.
Looks great! Now, wasn’t someone making correct (to my knowledge anyway) hangers at one point? SMS Auto or something like that? I remember speaking with Tom Lawrance about this (and he said he sent some place NOS hangers and never saw them again) and he was surprised that MU was selling correct parts (I believe) at one point (where I got mine).
They look very nice and correct Scott. definitely a nice addition to the Cougar repo inventory of parts. should the p-side rubber hanger have white rubber belting? The original exhaust on my XR7G has white on the P-side muffler hanger. I don’t recall if it was white on the 69 original exhaust. I would have to look.
Arild is right. Some had white sidewall and some didn’t. I have many original hangers with no white on them, like the ones in the photos I posted. Same is true for Mustang hangers.
This is wonderful stuff. On my '68, which had original 3-18-68 dated muffler on the driver side, I had the wider Mustang hanger, which matched the muffler 's tabs. The passenger side had what must be the Cougar width. “There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio,” or one of those other things we learned in high school.
They recycled old tires to get the rubber, random cuts out of side walls, so considering much of the supply they were recycling would be about 10 years old of course one in 20 might be white wall. If you got in touch with Coker I bet you could in time end up with some bum tires to cut up. Just finding one set of four take offs would make quite a few strips, rarely have I seen more than two on a car that were made from a wide white. Those look spot on , Dave at precision exhaust and others have “planned on” making correct hangers for the Cougar but it has never been done to my knowledge.
If you have occasion to speak with Kurt at KTL, ask him. I know Tom sent some place NOS ones to make repro’s from, maybe that never happened but I believe I bought correct ones from MU (and Tom was surprised when I told him about it).
I’ll have to make a quick measurement of the dimensions Scott provided, that should help clear this notion of mine up.
Bob: I don’t think anyone made “correct” reproductions. I remember spending time looking for OEMs (ca 2007) and would have bought repros if they were “good enough.” I was frequently visiting MU.com during that time (and WCCC, M+, Mansfield, et al.). I don’t recall having the option. Are they different for CJ’s?
