I was getting weary of all the '68 Cougar Hot Wheel (“XR7-G”) repaints, but luckily I swung by the die cast aisle at my local Wallymart and found this.
Looks NASCAR inspired with some serious fender flairs - even got the engine size right!
I gottta gits me one of them ther things, that is if I can beat the local scalpers to the store. We have people here that get up in the middle of the night and go to the stores for new Hot Wheels, mainly Treasure Hunts.
Was the black car something new? Or an old release? JL did have a black 68 that was released several years ago, it was on the oversized cardboard style card. There was also a black 67 that was in the totally encased in plastic style package however that was a chase piece and not easy to find. I have not seen a new Cougar release from JL for about 2 years. Would it be possible for you to post a photo of the black 68? Thanks.
Carlton, you should not have much problem finding the new HW Cougar. My fellow HW collectors around here tell me that Wal-Mart is flooded with them.
Not sure if the link will work, lol…but if it does, just scroll down to the old ad.
I’m not really a collector. I bought it because it’s pretty much exactly what my cars going to look like when I’m done. I also put in a bid on a $100 original release 67 (easy enough to change the year!) Cougar 1:24 model…but the bidding passed me by, and I just couldn’t justify spending that much…lol.
I like it. It looks like something that just came off the track after winning the “B” Main at the county fairgrounds track in about 1978. It also looks like a toy that a kid could actually play with, instead of a precious collectible (barf) that you don’t dare take out of the package.
Thanks Cris, the link worked. Yup, that is an older release JL. As I recall from the early to mid 2000s. It is not a real easy one to find. If you really want to build a 1/24-1/25th scale model check with the Modelhaus, they used to offer a 67 resin conversion kit. You get all the 67 specific parts but you will need to also purchase one of the newer release 69 kits for the chassis and driveline.
I just picked up this 1:64 scale '68 R-Code Cougar this weekend. It’s made by M2. I found it at Wally world. Kinda cool to see that someone is actually building models of such a rare car.
M2 has both a 68 and a 70 Cougar casting. There are various colors and a few variations on the body/engine combinations. Wal-Mart will have the cars in a plastic case and hobby stores will have them on a blister card.
If memory serves me, that '68 with the CJ hood scoop first showed up a few years ago labeled as “1968 Mercury Cougar XR-7” and was a bright lime green.
