New Walking Cat Rubber Floor Mats

Cougar owners rejoice! WCCC just got in a pallet of these new OEM style rubber floor mats (link). These are Ford-licensed recreations of the original accessory mats you could get from the dealer when these cars were new. We only have them in black, and I’m not aware of any plans to do other colors currently. They come in a set of 4. Nice thick rubber with non-slip nubs on the back like the originals. Here are some pics:

These fit 1967-73 coupes, and can easily be trimmed for convertibles. I’ll be posting a trimming guide and some additional pics momentarily. Anyway, I think these are a great thing to have, and will probably be getting a set for myself. Check them out here.

Follow up for convertible owners!

Luckily we had a nice original set of convertible mats to use as a template to make these diagrams. It’s fairly easy to trim these down, just measure, mark, and use a good straightedge on top of some cardboard and a box cutter or similar strong razor knife to cut the extra material off.

On the driver’s side, I’m not sure why the original tapers to full width at the back. When you see the finished pictures below in a '69 convertible, you’ll see that you might as well just do an even trim all the way back. Up to you! Maybe it’s different on the 71-3 cats? Anyway…

So, after trimming up a set ourselves based on these guidelines, we stuck them in a '69 convertible we had laying around to see how they fit. Pretty good!

Bought! I can finally put my originals on the shelf to preserve them. The extra 10% off was nice too.

They look great!

But I need dark blue…

I’m wondering how well the SEM paint would hold up on these if properly prepped and everything. It’s good stuff but obviously mats take a fair bit of abuse. I’m thinking it’s not likely that we’ll see other colors made, since the demand for each individual color is pretty low compared to black. Not sure what the minimum quantity is to do a run of these, but probably more than would be practical to do each color. I’d like to be proven wrong though!

Me, too – any blue, but definitely blue.

Andrew, is the SEM product a paint or something more like a dye?

I wouldn’t try to change the color! SEM will not hold up on floor mats, nor will anything else! And yes some blue and red, please!!!

It’s a spray-on flexible paint for things like vinyl and plastic. I’ve had good results using it on things like door panels and plastic trim (when properly prepped). I’ve even heard of people using it to freshen up faded carpets. Haven’t tried it on rubber though, so not sure how well it would hold up, especially being rubbed by feet constantly. It would be an interesting experiment!

It would work fine on a car that is seldom driven if you dont mind touching them up once a year.

An experiment is now underway… just painted a set of these mats with the SEM “Shadow Blue” paint. Prepped with their “plastic & leather prep” stuff which is supposed to remove mold release, which could be a factor on these, along with any other contaminants. Gonna let them sit in the sun for a couple days to really cure and post back with results! They actually look pretty good so far.

For what its worth, I tried dying a set of originals with vinyl dye. I scrubbed and scrubbed them, then used the vinyl prep spray, then the dye. This paint and prep was whatever brand John’s sold 10 years ago.

The rear and passenger mats held up well - with some, but not a lot, of passenger use. The driver’s side wore through within the first season. As Don mentioned, it works if your willing to re-apply periodically. I would think that virgin mats might hold the dye better.

It is supposed to be 87 degrees this week and being that the pours are not filled with decades of contaminants I am thinking one should be able to use these 10 times (or so) before touch up on the DS is required. These mats are more pliable then 50 year old sets. We are selling these at no up-charge when they cure, anyone want a blue set?

Nice to see these available again. I ordered a set of black today. I was able to get a set of green ones last year from John’s.

Here’s an update on the painting experiment! A customer stopped by with a blue '68 so I took the opportunity to throw these painted mats in and take some pics. They had plenty of time to cure and they look pretty nice! He’s going to keep them in place for a while and see how they wear. Obviously, the driver’s mat will be the most telling.

Looks very nice!!!

That doesn’t look painted…

I LIKE the way they look!

That SEM paint is magical, I tell ya. We’ll have to see how well it holds up to foot scuffing, the next time that guy shows up.

I have to agree the SEM stuff is ridiculously good stuff
