New Walking Cat Rubber Floor Mats

The P/N is what is marked on the box the mats come in.

I would commit to two sets of dark blue floor mats. Two sets, each set having both front and both rear mats.

So that makes 3 people looking (4 sets) total. Can we get to 50  ? I should contact JCC and see if that is a realistic number.

I would commit to 25…

Hoarder…

I would also commit to one set red ones for my Mom’s Cardinal Red '67 STD.

I would like a dark blue set…

Drake says 500 is the minimum run for colored mats, we are pretty much the only ones selling the black mats and we have sold nowhere near 500 of the black mats, Drake is a little disappointed in the sales on them and I hope they do not discontinue them.

That’s a shame, would think floor mats would sell pretty well, especially black ones

I was selling Cougars as a salesman at a L-M dealership in 1970.The “Cougar Head” embossed mats could be ordered with a new Cougar as a new car order from Mercury. If not ordered with the car, they could be ordered later directly thru the selling dealer, but the sets provided to dealers as an after sale item were the exact mat but WITHOUT the Cougar head embossment. I know, I ordered several sets post-sale, and they always came with out the “Cougar head”. I own a 70 XR7 with “Cougar Head” original dark blue mats. They look great with my blue interior.

I’m not sure how these are manufactured, but isn’t the tooling/setup already done? It doesn’t seem like you would need a whole new set up just to make them a different color. Aren’t they just using different dye?

In the past we always created unique tools for each color when running rubber. Otherwise when you changed colors you had terrible contamination problems. The different colors are not created by adding dye. You have to buy a minimum quantity of material in the color you want to run. I suspect that the minimums have more to do with raw material cost and how many you have to throw away in the color change process.

I haven’t the time at the moment to dig out my L-M Parts book CD and look them all up to provide a full list, but thought that this information would be helpful to all. It comes from the 1974 Lincoln Mercury Accessories Price List that I have at my desk. Below are the following colors and related part numbers for the “Rubber, Two-Piece Front” floor mats for a Cougar. In the full line accessories brochure, the photo is of the mats which are being described in this thread.

Black, D4WY-6213086-E
Blue, D4WY-6513086-B
Brown, D4WY-6513086-B
Green, D4WY-6513086-A
White, D4WY-6513086-C
Red, D4WY-6213086-D

I once had a set of the green mats, and they were identical to a black set I also had for my '68, other than the cast in part/engineering number they had on the back. I have observed that for some reason, FoMoCo would occasionally update the part number on an item with no discernable difference – assume that’s the case here. Other than the color variations, of course.

List price was $8.45/pair.

Double check those numbers? I would like to post this on my site.

Blue, D4WY-6513086-B
Brown, D4WY-6513086-B

Dennis,
Those numbers are interesting. It seems like it is possibly obvious that there may have been more than one manufacture in times past. Like I mentioned I have a single used black mat here with the numbers I posted above molded into the mat on the back side.
Royce mentioned that being a part number off a box, but its on the mat and a FoMoCo in a box molded in as well.

Royce,
FYI for the 1970 models you could get colored keyed front and rear floor mats as part of the “Appearance Protection Group” This included Bright Front Bumper Guards, Bright door edge Guards and Color Keyed front and rear floor mats.

My White XR-7 hardtop has this group and Ginger floor mats. I also had a 70 with Red interior that also had this group and had the floor mats with it. It was a parts acr and I still have the mats. I think only Black mats were available from 67 through 69.

Don, I’ve confirmed those are the numbers for those two colors, as listed in said brochure. Probably like you, I don’t understand why some base part numbers start with the 62 (denoting a 2-door post sedan) and the others start with 65 (denoting a two-door hardtop).

David, I couldn’t say for sure. I don’t have two sets to compare, but from my recollection, at least, the black set from my '68 and the green set I once had appeared to be made from identical tooling. (This was way back before they were reproduced.)

What I am seeing is the exact part number for blue and brown. That is impossible

Here’s a picture of the end of a box of green fronts.
