Would a RAD (Borg Warner) 4 Speed Standard Transmission with a 302 bell housing from a 70’s or 80’s mustang just bolt up to a 1968 XR7 w/302 ? I’ve read about T5s being just bolt up… but wonder about this unit which I may be able to score on the cheap. Thanks!
Likely what you have is an overdrive 3 speed transmission. Either photos or the tag number would tell what it is.
Hi Royce. Thank you as always! Here’s the ad I was looking at with the photos. Seemed like ‘maybe’ . I don’t know this person at all. Redirecting...
Let me know what you think.
His description is OK. The transmissions were used from 1979 - 82 in Mustangs, Capris, Fairmont and Mercury version of a Fairmont. They are an overdrive three speed. Not good for performance. If great mileage is what you want there you go.
I’m gonna have to do something. My avg after installing the fuel injection is 7.5 MPG
My RPMs are around 2300 at 45/50 MPH
A better plan is to use a T5. The first four gears are like a normal 4 speed. Fifth is overdrive.
I’ve been keeping an eye out for a T5 locally but when I see them they are going for a premium easily above $1k. And of course that’s not including the parts to install a 3rd pedal.
The T5 will be worth the expense and effort because you will keep the performance and still have better mileage - maybe 1 - 2 MPG better than you are getting now. The three speed with OD you will hate the performance but at least it will give the same mileage.
This is a Mustang II 4-speed transmission designed for the low HP/torque capabilities of the 1974-78 engines.

Save up your money for a T5 or TKX.
Save some more. The T5-Z is a good transmission and only $2K at Summit Racing. Brand new!
I have one in my White 70 XR-7.
