Looking to put a shaker scoop on top of my 68 390.
- Has anyone done it here?
- Which scoop did you use?
- Can it work on a aluminum intake
- Was there a template to cut the hood?
Thanks,
John-
Looking to put a shaker scoop on top of my 68 390.
I did it on my 68 XR7 in the mid 70’s I bought a 70 Mach 1 that had a 351W 2v with a Shaker from the factory, the car was a total so we dropped the engine in the XR7 with a alum intake cant remember which one. No issues we measured the scoop and cut the hood so it would fit. we took the measurements off the back of the Mach 1 hood to locate the cut out. We did not use the trim ring since I sold the complete nose from the Mach. It looked good on the Cougar. I dont see an issue unless you run an intake with an offset carb like a sidewinder or a really tall intake.
CATS club member Mat Shuman put a shaker on his 68 Cougar. He’s not on this forum. if your on Facebook you can look him up at 'Snot Rod".
Here is a thread showing a shaker hood scoop on a ‘67 XR7:

I will try to get in touch with snot rod.
But I’m leaning towards ordering the Scott drake setup from CJ’s it’s got a template and trim ring. It’s fiberglass though… I curious how the template measures up to a cougar hood…
Also There is a aluminum / steel setupfrom pce on Amazon. I don’t know pce.
I’m going to investigate some more to see how the fiberglass holds up before I purchase
Try Ford ram air.com
Yes I saw them, but Ford ram air is pulling out of my price range…
I dig it! what is cool now that the repro hood is available it will free up some of those fears about cutting a hole in your hood! I was afraid to do anything with mine since it was so solid and rust free. At the time they had been expensive and hard to find replacements if I changed my mind. Today one could get a repro hood and do whatever modification they want and save their original hood if they desire.
The original hood is still a part that is irreplaceable. The repro hood might look similar on the outside, but detail - wise it’s not the same. If you are going to cut a hole in something please do it to a repro hood. Save the real ones for those of us who care about the difference.
I hear ya…this is what I was referring too. Cut the hole in the repro and keep the original unmolested. I would always modify the repro first before cutting up a good original.
It has a solid b hood with 3 layers of gold paint on it. Probably worth 500 or so. That’s close to a new hood.
But still I’m sure it will take me at least 3 weeks of thinking before I start the first cut…
I have 2 others hanging in the rafters if I want to go back.
I’ve been wanting this look since 89’ so I think it’s worth it.
Maybe I’ll get crazy and put a hole in for a hood tack on the 68 pontiac wagon next…
