Sleepycat: The Journey Continues!

The project started here:

The carport in the pictures is her permanent home, and I drag her to my Shop (PD Repair, 1 Block away) when it’s time to do some work on her. Hopefully, I will have more progress made (And Pictures) Before the end of the year.

Sleepycat I wish you well on your project. I know ideas are limited by time and money. It will be great to have another classic cat in our area.

Yaaaaaaaay! The Dreaded Bumper Crease! This Oughtta be FUN! :wall: :wall: :wall:

Just looked over you posts on the other site. I was amazed when I went to put a vent window in my drivers door and when I pulled the door panel off, mine still had the original vapor barrier in place as well. I was just as shocked. I felt bad having to remove it, but oh well, gotta get repairs done.

I’ve got one of those too. Let me know how you get it out.

I will be watching your progress on this little area as my 69 eliminator has the exact same dilemma on the driver side as well. I am going to try to straighten mine without major paint damage, but I am not very hopeful :frowning:

you’ll notice the recess for the bumper is also the seam where the Quarter & the Tail light panel come together, and it’s been shoved forward, causing the crease. if yours is creased this bad, I can guarantee you the paint will crack. :open_mouth:

Unfortunately, I have to finish the S-15, so I can sell it & buy what I need to Finish the Cougar.

almost ready to set the engine in…

It turns out this car got shoved pretty hard! The Bumper was embedded into the end of the quarter, hard enough that it broke the welds at the bottom of the tail light panel, and pushed the panel forward about 1/2 inch.(No bolts on the outside tail light studs) remedy: Panel has to move back to remove the crease. The tool I decided to do this with?? A Truck Tire Bead Breaker. …:WARNING!:. If you decide to use one to do this, hit it ONCE, and look at what moved, or this will happen!

Anyway, after learning how much massage to put to it, 5 or 6 whacks along the edges of the light panel, and a whack on the crease inside the quarter with a Dead-Blow Hammer, produced this:

As you can see, there was filler from a previous crease repair, so,… Remove Filler, a little bit of light massaging with a 3 Lb. Hammer head as a dolly, a 4 oz Ball-pien, a little black rattle can, and partial assembly to show how close I got it and voila! No more bottom of the Quarter Panel!!! :unamused: But at least the crease is Gone!

I will weld the Rear panel seam when I replace the lower Quarter, & Trunk floor extension, as well as work the imperfections out of where the crease was.

Here’s some better pics of what I did yesterday. Took 4 Hrs, including taking it apart the second time.

The other side needs it too, just not as bad :eh:

Today is wiring removal day, after bagging & tagging what I’ve removed so far.

It’s a good day!!!

Your repair looks good in the pictures. I know it has to feel good when progress is made when working on your car.
Steven

Well, Thanksgiving weekend was good, I managed to drink too much beer, eat too much Turkey, and completely De-store my cougar! I left the front suspension assembled so I can move it if necessary.

Now on to the next part,…Rust removal. But I am impressed at how good of shape she’s really in!

Most of it is surface rust, except the bottom of the Left Quarter, and Trunk floor(only needs patching).

So, I had a warm day to run the Fan, & Open the Shop up today(I love it in the south!), decided to do a little more body work on the Rear Quarter Took 2 Hrs. to remove all the paint & Bondo, and was relatively pleased to find the deepest the plastic was: 3/16" where the door/ quarter meet.

Notice the open Dent Puller holes in the Wheel arch(but Ignore the 50-Series Camera Stand):

Side View:

And The Metal work already done:

Now for the dilemma; Work the dents, and hope I can re-create the lower quarter to look original(which I will probably end up doing), or, replace the quarter completely(Kill a decent & recent Vinyl top, But have a better end result). either way, Time and $$$ :unamused: - But worth it!

Looks like the metal work turned out good from the pictures. I would try to save the top if it’s new abd the quarter looks good.

I know the weather is crazy here. Had a jacket on this morning now its warn and sunny. Hardly feels like Christmas weather when it is 73 outside.

Isn’t it great?!? It’s Just making up for being cold all last winter!

Pete

Had a Flat tire this evening while driving the Mrs’ Subie, This was in the Spare Tire well…

I promised her I wouldn’t try them out till X-Mas! :liar:

LMAO! That’s awesome! I use to hide all the family presents in the Hero when it would be parked for the winter. Nobody EVER went inside there especially with the cover on.

That’s a pretty nice set of body tools. All it took was a flat tire to find your gift…I guess I should check in the tire well of my wifes car for gifts. Good hiding place.
Steven

I managed to keep my promise on the hammers! don’t know how, but I did. Spent this evening with a piece of 22ga. Sheetmetal, denting it, shrinking, & learning the feel. Totally New experience! :grin34:

All This surface Rust! and the Back half of the Trunk-floor is almost gone after hitting it with a wire-wheel!
This is gonna get pricey! :newburn:

Time to search for a donor!

LOL, awesome body tools!!! More awesome wife!!!

And, if it isn’t pricey, it isn’t FUN!!!
