So, H pipes, what's the deal?

I’m really making an effort to get my 69 to the Shelby event 31 Aug. I have a new pair of mufflers I’m going to go with. The purple hornies and 2 inch pipe are just too loud for an old guy. I have a buddy trying to convince me that I want “true duals”, and I don’t think so. I’ve always had the H,and am now curious as to why they would either help, or hurt an engine? I have two days to decide. I think I want the 2 1/2 inch pipe with the Walker two chamber “thrush” 2 chamber mufflers. ( that’s what I bought-). The question is about the “H” Pipe. value added, or performance killer?

I have H pipes on both of my 69’s. They seem to give the exhaust a more balanced throaty sound. On my '79 Bronco, I don’t have an H pipe and it’s a normal type exhaust sound. I believe the H pipe balances the pressures running thru your exhaust system, but not specifically anything to do with performance.

The H pipe helps performance and makes the car a bit quieter. I would not take it off.

I had straight duals on my 73. For whatever reason the pipes resonated at slightly different frequencies. At 2200 RPM (52 MPH on my car) the pipes would resonate, and it made a very annoying “wah-wah-wah-wah” sound at about 1 Hz. I had the cross piece put in to make an H-pipe. The resonances are still there, but barely noticeable. If I hadn’t been looking for it, I probably wouldn’t have noticed it. The evening out of the pulses from side to side should also improve performance, but you would probably need to compare results on a dyno to be sure. The noise reduction was well worth adding the pipe in my case. The exhaust sound is also much more mellow.

I went ahead and told the guy to add the H. I was mostly looking for any ‘real’ insight from folks that may have tried on a dyno. I have seen and heard people that have gone with the “true dual”, and there is some difference in sound, but for the money in 2024, I want the whole thing.
The exhaust that I am replacing was done in about 2006? 450~ish bucks. This time I was quoted 650. I guess that isn’t a bad increase over that much time, but it is a harder number to swallow. Stupid economy. EVERYTHING costs more,

Good call. H-pipes should help low end torque and make the the system less apt do “drone”.

If you’ve ever driven a car where the exhaust sets up a resonance while cursing it feels like your ears might be bleeding. Not good.

Love an update on how this all works out…

I get real annoyed by resonant cursing.

I will try and post a short video of the new exhaust when I get it back-

Helps it breathe leave the H pipe.

Well, I have a couple of pictures, as the car was done Friday. But for some reason the other shop didn’t finish their job, and so I haven’t gotten the car back yet. I was very disappointed to not have the car back- I will find out tomorrow how it turned out. The guy that did the work said he thought it was still too loud, or louder than I probably wanted it. We’ll see!-)

I would opt for the Walker, 3 chamber turbo mufflers.
