Taming of the Rat Cat

My Cougar had a little bit of front end damage. As I’m restoring parts, I find myself frequently playing a game I like to call “Is this Straight!” The pictures on WCCC really help.

I love that game. Especially after a few beers. :beerchug:

Gosh Al, I hope you don’t play that game whilst looking in the mirror and talking to yourself!!

:poke:

Dang, Al…you just gonna take that bent…errr…standing like a man??? :poke:

I’m a little off my game lately for some reason. I could usually come up with a good response, but I got nuthin’.

It’s a sad day.

I got this one for ya Al…
YEAH! Says YOU!

A retort like that will leave 'em stunned for quite some time.

Hey, 2ndxrnd…I think I hear bootheels…and they’re approaching FAST!!! RUN!!!

Here’s what I powder coated this week.

I put the chrome pieces on the headlight doors for effect. I have not finished them yet. I’ll strip those by hand. Does anyone have a favorite argent silver aerosol paint?

I also stripped a few things.

The hinges and hood latch will get a phosphate and oil finish. I didn’t do as thorough of a job stripping the hinges and hood latch as I would something that was going to be powder coated. The etching solution will take care of the rest. I’ve had pretty good luck with Kleen-Strip Phosphoric Prep & Etch and WD-40.

I’m almost finished powder coating and media blasting. I still have to powder coat my power steering pulley, engine insulator to shock tower brackets, transmission cross member and leaf spring brackets. I have to strip my hood springs and quarter panel extensions. I’m hoping I can finish everything before my TechShop membership expires, but it shouldn’t be a problem. Also, I have to strip the main portion of my grille and repair a half dozen cracks. Does anyone have any tips on fixing the cracks?

Hi Adam,

Sorry for the couple of hi-jack posts. I use an Eastwoods blackening kit for doing phosphate and oil and I finish them with Krylon matte clear (will last a lot longer than oil and gives the same sort of finish). I have a metal prep solution too, I forget the brand, haven’t tried it for blackening, just used it on bare metal.

So what is TechShop? Sounds intriguing and makes me want to know more.

Regards,

Bob

Nevermind! The internet is my friend. Awesome!: http://techshop.ws/

Got any close ups of the headlight doors? Looks like they came out very nice!

Don’t worry about the hi-jacks. I gave up on defending this thread long ago. :egoshooter:

I tried the prep and etch because I had a gallon of it on hand from my POR-15 project. As far as WD-40 goes, it isn’t a garage without at least one little can. I prefer the gallon jug and pump sprayer myself.

Edit: The picture doesn’t do them justice. The bolts look better in person.

Here you go.

Very nice!

I agree!
You gonna try the vents at a lower temp?

I had good luck with the headlight bezels and vinyl top trim at 350F. The headlight bezels are very slightly warped (less than 1/8 inch across the lower edge), but they are much thinner than the vents and they were a little warped before I baked them. Once they are installed, you won’t be able to tell. The vinyl top trim didn’t move at all. The argent silver powder I have cures at 350F so I don’t think I would have a problem doing the vents, but I’d really like a test piece before I try.

I wish I could powder coat the main grille, but there is no way. That stuff is too thin and way too expensive to replace if I ruin it. Plus, most of the stuff used to repair cracks melts at these temps.

I ordered some 1/4" X 1/8" X 6’ rectangular aluminium bars from McMaster-Carr (part number 4490T14) to use for my new vinyl top retainer. Here’s the excess next to what was left of the original.

Adam everything looks great so far. As far as the argent paint goes National Parts Depot used to list a rattle can as argent. There was a lot of discussion on the other site about this color. I remeber someone restored their steel styled wheels and the argent areas between the chrome spokes they used “chrome” rattle can paint (never looks like chrome) and it looked great. It turned out a a bright silver. If you sprayed a test piece you could lay it on the the headlight door to see the contrast you get with your powder coating. It might be easier to get than argent, just go to Lowes or any hardware store. For crack repair JB weld, strong and can be sanded and painted.

Que pasa senior? Are you talking to ME? Que es… “boots”? :bandit:

HEY! 3! Downhere! The hat has a draw string for when I bolt! Dont have to hold it on… much. It’s really a quality piece!
