Taming of the Rat Cat

I found a place online that sells Argent in a rattle can. I should have it Tues, I’ll test it and let you know what I think. I didn’t want to use the Motorcraft brand because I keep hearing that it’s too glossy.

Adam, everything looks great, there’s one place that I know of in my area that powder coats and is still quite expensive. To be able to do it yourself must be very satisfying. Sal

It is “Butch”, not “boots”.

Thanks Steven. I tried to use Rustoleum chrome to repaint my instrument bezels and it came out like polished aluminum. I’m tempted to test the powder coating on my driver side headlight cover grille since WCCC has them on sale for $5 right now.

I’ll give JB weld a shot. From my experience, it is tough stuff. When I worked in the hot rod shop, our bread and butter came from refurbishing cracked turbo housings. Sometimes I would sit there all day with a die grinder grinding out the carbon deposits in the cracks. The big cracks would be welded up by the experienced mechanic and I would touch up the welds and small cracks with JB weld. A quick coat of cast iron high temp paint and off they went to the rebuilder.

I’ve read the same thing about the Motorcraft stuff. I’m interested in hearing about your results.

Thanks Sal. It is very satisfying every time I get to do the work myself. I love this stuff.

Butch n Boots?? :cyclops:

Nice Adam! I could not see the pictures at work, but have now from home. Love it!

If that Argent silver turns out to your liking I would really like to know where you got it. I will be needing some soon as the weather warms up enough. Harv

Here’s my DS hinge after soaking over night in Prep & Etch and a coat of WD-40.

3 Gallon Roughneck
Prep & Etch
Gallon WD-40
WD-40 sprayer

Tips: 1) Degrease the part the best you can before soaking it. 2) Wait for all the bubbles to go away. This means the chemical reaction has stopped. Your part will end up darkest this way. 3) Don’t partially submerge your part and think you can flip it half way through the process. You will end up with stripes on your part.

Thanks.

Adam, on parts treated like this, how often do you need to recoat with WD-40? As that stuff dries out, the bare part will start to rust.

I have no clue how often it is required. I guess I’ll find out eventually. I based what I did on this article in
Mustang Monthly.

Looks great Adam, I still would receommend Krylon Matter Clear instead of WD-40 though. Same look, no rusting. Just a thought.

Holy guacamole…Esmerelda, stay way far away from that 2ndxrnd character! Chuck Norris is after him!!

Adam- Man, stuff is looking NICE!

Sprayed the argent paint on a couple different surfaces and I am satisfied with the way it looks. Posting the link where I got it. The website is a bit squirrely as the payment goes through another site. But they did fill my order without any problems. I used the PPG code when ordering - 32520.

1971 Cougar Outer Wheel Bearings - PartsGeek - $11.70/pr

1967 Thunderbird Caliper Repair Kits - PartsGeek - $19.70/pr

I still need a master cylinder, tie rod ends, brake hoses, proportioning valve, and brake pads. I also have to get a pair of caliper brackets from Mike at MAECO Motorsport and slightly modify the calipers.

Adam glad to see things are going good for your project. I have to say you have the nicest floors I have ever seen in a garage. :poke:
Steven

Thanks Steven. :beerchug: Yep, I’ve got lots of parts piled in my office. That corner I try to keep clear for pictures.

Thanks, Al. What type of paint did you get and how many cans? Did you use the acrylic based lacquer or the urethane with clear coat?

Thanks, Bob. I picked up a can of Krylon Matte Clear. For $5 it is worth a shot.

I got the lacquer and only ordered one can as I wasn’t sure how good it would be. One can will stretch pretty far for small parts and touch ups.
