Timing Cover Compatibility

Question regarding timing cover/water pump compatibility. I'm converting my cooling system over to a 1970 351 Windsor cross flow system. The car in question is a 1968 Cougar XR7. The original drivetrain is long gone. I purchased the car with a Ford Racing Boss Short Block (M-6009-427F) already in it with AFR heads. Car has a mechanical fuel pump. Dip stick is on the passenger side already as well as a aftermarket timing pointer. Car had what appears to be the 1968 passenger side inlet cooling system. My question is can I bolt up the 1970 water pump to what looks like 1968 timing cover? All the mounting holes are the same with the exception that the 1970 does not have the provision for the top center mounting hole. It does have a steel backing plate. Are they compatible?

Look at the shape of your exit points on the rear of the pump with the steel plate in place and be certain that they look proper. You may need to upgrade to the aftermarket cover that has the provision for the Ford timing tool……down near the intake port of the pump. I didn’t want interference with the large hose on my setup, so simply cut that piece off. BUTT, I was putting a 68-69 style pump on a 92 5L and this aftermarket cover made that port match possible. The opposite of what you are trying to do.

Sounds like you have the dipstick and the timing pointer dialed in! Balancer???

Your mileage may vary slightly…….

Cheers!
Steve

Most 66-up timing covers are compatible with the driver’s side inlet water pump with the backplate. The top center hole isn’t used on that style pump, only the passenger side inlet pumps.

Appreciate the responses. Almost have the accessory brackets sorted out. It has been a learning experience…
