Hello i have a 1967 cougar with a mildly built 351c hooked to a c4 auto. I have a 411 posi rearend i want to continue to try to extract more power from the motor eventually but for now i need a transmission, my transmission is cuttently a spent c4 with a reverse manual valvebody. With so many options out there i need help.so i did drive it around town quite a bit but on the highway i would run high rpms…it felt pretty good but i kept feeling like it should have one more gear. I was wandering if i should stick with a c4 or go with an aoe i do like sticks so i have been looking into toploader 4 speeds…not knowing theres wide and close gear ratios. Im wanting this car to be able to tool around town and car shows yet kick ass at the track if i take it there. I cant tell you how much power the motor has at this moment but i do know the heads are the closed chamber boss heads…it had a dp holly 650 with machanical secondary on a edlbrock torquer intake. Due to it constantly falling on its face trying to floor it from still idle i chanced it to an edl airgap and quick fuel 750 with vaccum secondary. I was told automatics would outperform a stick at the strip. Any kind of direction would be greatly appreciated
If you are keeping the 4:11’s & are OK w/pulling high RPMs on the highway, then a CR toploader (WR are for 3.25 and numerically lower) or a rebuild of your C4 will work.
If you want OD, then you’ll need to swap to a more modern trans. Seems like the AOD works well w/a 4:11 gear.
Its kinda one of those things, can you race with od also. Not sure
Something I have wanted, the best of both worlds ; https://www.gearvendors.com/hrford3s.html
There are many performance AOD trannys out there. This company has the best of the best.
The 86 to 93 AOD has a weird shift pattern. If you try to manually shift it, it goes from 1st to 3rd. You can force it manually by immediately pulling back on the shifter into low as it shifts out of low. Sounds weird, right! It is so counter intuited to normal shifting it scares me! Lentech offers a way improved valve body that includes a rocker switch to shift in an out of OD. And then changes the AOD to shift like a C4. And they also offer a trans brake and reverse valve body if you are so inclined. If you like an auto their stuff is bomb proof. I "reprogramed my stock shifter to force you to push the button to go into neutral. This allows manual shifting without fear of hitting neutral.
Another company is:

They offer complete packages for Mustangs. Pretty sure they will work for Cougars. I have pics of my reprogrammed shifter and have used both companies and install myself. I prefer Lentech because of the reprogramed valve body in a normal pattern vice reverse. But PATCO trannys are also bomb proof. The AOD’s can withstand as much HP as any tranny out there. I prefer a manual tranny and just installed a TKO 600 5 speed from Modern Driveline in my 67 Mustang. It is the shit!! Either AOD or 5 speed performance 5 speed will eat up around the same $4k to $5k based on accessories.
I can step you through you purchase. The guys at a Lentech and Modern Driveline are the best!! I have a shop and run customer cars through and have installed all of these products. I also rebuild top loaders if need be.

I wanted an overdrive and decided on a 4r70w that was beefed up and stuffed into an AOD body (ie no electronics) Its rated to handle 700 hp, has a lower 1st and 2nd gear and yet I still got that overdrive to cruise on the hwy keeping mpg down as well as the wear and tear.
Does it have a toggle switch for the OD, or does it shift like an original AOD? The ones I have installed are also rated in the 700 HP range. Who did you get it from?

Also I offered 2500 and they took the offer if you are interested so possible they do that again.
No switch but it could be developed
Can you manually shift it like a C4/C6?
