Hello my fellow cougar owners, I recently acquired a 70 cat that the PO lost all the keys. What is the best way to get the lock set out of the trunk? My 69 has one key for the ignition and one for the trunk. Were the 70’s keyed the same with two keys?
Thnx, you guys are the best!
Steve
70’s are the same as '69. I would pull the trunk lock and have a key made by a locksmith.
Take both back seats out. Bottom will lift out. There are two screws that hold the upper piece at the bottom. Crawl into trunk. Use screwdriver to lift/ pry the metal wedge out. There is a flat top to help pry out.
And here are the correct key blanks for a 70. Your locksmith can use these to create original looking keys.
WCCC can cut a new key if you have the code. The codes are sometimes written in the owner’s manual if you have that. Easier than spelunking into the trunk.
The code for the trunk lock would be printed on the glove box lock
I remove the back seats, then use a 7/16 socket, with long extension to remove the 3 bolts on the trunk latch. This will open the trunk lid much easier.
If the glove box is unlocked that’s where you can get the code
The code for your ignition key would be on your drivers door lock
Thanks all for the advice/tips. Glove box is unlocked so I’ll start there.

Hello again, I removed the glove box lock set and have the code off of that. Today I moved to the door lock. I removed the arm rest and inner door panel. I pulled the locking plate off and now I’m wondering how do I get the door lock arm disconnected from the little tab on the end of the door lock? I can pull the lock set out from the outside of the door and I looked it over some and didn’t see any code stamped into it like the glove box lock set has. Am I missing it? Or is the key code stamped on the little tab C-clipped to the end of the lock set? I see numbers on it ?
Not a lot of room in there to work😲
Also is now a good time to replace the inner and outer door felt and seal? Any special hacks I need to know before tackling that?
Thnx Steve
Check the right side door lock cylinder, Ford some times only the code on the right door cylinder
And yes, while you have both door panels off is a good time to replace water shields, weatherstrips, lube window and latch mechanisms, and clean debris out of the door bottom.
Ok, so took passenger side door liner off to get that lock set out and when I did I found that lock set to have no key code stamped in to that side either ? I should be looking for a a number that begins with FB correct? Not what’s in the picture?
Yes FB should be stamped on side of the cylinder
Sorry should be FA on cylinder , FA is for ignition and doors, FB is for trunk and glove box
Ok thanks, looks like I have two passenger side lock cylinders installed neither one has any code stamped in to it. On to plan B.
For what its worth, Stevenye, one of the previous owners of your Cougar has already been into the lock tumblers. The Engineering number of D2AB-6521970-AA is a 1972 service part for the latch operating lever ( p/n D2AZ-6521970-A ). Either the lever ( by itself ) was replaced or the entire lock tumbler assembly was done some time in the past.
Yes, the car was painted some time ago and that’s probably when the switch was made. Thank you for the input. You guys are the best!
A good brick and mortar locksmith should be able to this for you.
When I first started locksmithing full time. My boss would get mad at me for doing auto door lock locks ignition keys etc.
Long story short my buddy who trained me in beginning locksmith stuff. Taught me this stuff.
