Still looking to purchase a 68 GT-E XR7. Driver quality or better. As original as possible, ready to go car. Any leads appreciated.

Roush has a red std gte with no motor for sale for $25k if you get desperate

Sounds kind of interesting! :open_mouth:

Sounds like a nice candidate for a coyote swap

Certain cars should never get that type of swap and a GT-E is one of them, In my opinion. Now a base or an XR-7 is a different story.

Interesting indeed.

I would agree with you if you can find the original engine or a proper date coded replacement.
Otherwise, I would say go for it.

Putting anything in a GT-E but a 427 is purely ridiculous, even a non date code correct is at least keeping it’s heritage. Not only would you do something stupid, you’d devalue the car by thousand and thousands of dollars. Talk like that is insane.

GT-E without an engine is worth more than one in it (even if it isn’t the correct one)?

Not very hard to find a correct block, they only made 4 runs, they as a rule were not vin stamped and many were sold over the counter. The correct heads, smog pump pulley, distributor and other tidbits are the real challenge.

They cannibalized the red one to put the black one together.

If I were going to do a Coyote swap, I would find something less rare. But really, the beauty of a hobby and a free country is the freedom do whatever the hell you want regardless of what I think.

Next time they call I will gently tell them their mirror is upside down and they have the wrong trim rings.

Was the red one a solid car before they pulled stuff off?

Thanks for the response Don. I’m going to hold out for a correct car.

I thought I had a picture of it, but can’t find it. Don’t remember the condition for sure as it was about 2004 the last time I seen it. They have a area in the museum that was for projects waiting to be restored and it was in with them. Last time I was there in 2011 it was no longer in that area. I know it wasn’t a total basket case and a restorable shell. You need to come over for the 50th Cougar show at Ford Headquarters. We plan on doing a visit to the Roush museum.

An amateur restoration had been started many years ago and the work was not quality. It is an East Coast car so it had some rust repair done. This is all second hand but from a very reliable source that has owned several GTE’s.

I have a set of 427 heads that have the partial vin from Jacks daughter GTE that came from Va., if anyone is interested.

Catlover,

PM sent.

I’ve seen Susan (Jack’s daughter’s) red car. It is a rough, yet restorable project. Not for the faint of heart. Needs trunk floor work, floor pans, inner fender repairs, and it is missing a lot. You will need a rust free '68 Cougar with the same date codes to use for parts. You will ruin the donor car to save this one.

The price is probably higher than I would want to pay, but how many GT-E’s are there for sale?

This one.

Here’s some current pictures of the car
