1967 Mercury Cougar XR7

My engine would idle fine but die as soon as I pressed the brakes, but in my case it had nothing to do with the brakes, it was because the battery was dead. For whatever reason, the extra current draw for all those lights would kill it. Replaced the battery and haven’t had a problem since.

If your pedal goes to the floor then something is up with your brakes, I just wanted to share.

No I pressed the Gas pedal and it died, so its pretty much empty on Fuel…Waiting on this guy I know to help me out with the Brakes and the Automatic Shifter

Finally the Cougar gets its Treatment, New Master Cylinder, and the Lines bled out. Then the Shifter fixed, it may be a few days but it will eventually be on the road…So excited !!!

Alright Folks my Turn signals do not work
Brake lights work but turns do not

Is there a Fuse box some where in the car ?

If so post photos
I need help A.S.A.P

The fuse panel is under the dash, mounted to the inside firewall, up and to the left of the brake pedal pad. May want to post your inquiry to this thread;
http://www.classiccougarcommunity.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2518 …and educate yourself with this website, Cougars Unlimited http://www.thuntek.net/cougars_unlimited/seqts.htm

What type of Bulbs go in the back lower lights ?

Could it be that the Fuses are bad and thats why the Signals are not working or so ?
Plus the interior Lights do not light up neither do the door panel lights or the back

By lower bulbs ,…the round clear lens lights in the rear valance are the reverse lights, the bulb is an 1156. If you have a multi-meter check the fuses for continuity…I believe the lower right hand fuse in the panel is for the lights. Second, back check the main power feed at the solenoid,…It’s a heavy black (10 gauge) wire, connected with the positive lead to the battery, on the solenoid.

Alright Thanks, I will check the Fuse box tomorrow…Sure hope its just a fuse…

Found some holes on the sides of the Trunk :frowning:

Well, if the fuse is bad, more than not there is a short or was a temporary hot to ground between a lighting component and the power source. My best wishes are for a good fuse and a bad ground or pathway.

One of them Small Fuses were missing

What does the Small little Fuse Tube go too ?

Maybe this will help you.

Steven

I see the little Fuse box under the dash, does that control the lights and possibly the turn signals ?

They looked to be bad or missing

PLEASE HELP!!! I have a 1996 Mercury Cougar xr7 v8. I have been searchin and looking every where for the location of the purge valve. Can someone help me.

Tommy, someone here may be able to help you but it will be more likely if you start your own thread rather than hijack one. If you’ve already done that and no one responded, it may be that no one here knows that particular year. A good first step in that case would be to try to get a shop manual for your car. Many of us have them for the specific year of Cougar we own and they cover most everything on the car.

Try this picture. It should explain what goes where as far as the fuses.
Steven

Alright I put new fuses in, I don’t think the Turn Signals work :frowning:
I hope its just the Battery has ran down

The Door Panel lights don’t work either or the Fuel and stuff…I am missing the 2.5 Amp Fuse though but other then that I should be good

The Seat belt warning over head works but nothing else

Can someone respond ?

Look close and zoom in on the picture that Steven has provided. If you did not put in the 2.5 fuse, then that could be a good part of what isn’t working. Make sure your battery is charged and put in all the fuses. Then we can go from there.

And after you charge your battery (or replace it) and do some testing, you should probably disconnect the ground wire from it when you’re not testing. If there is a short, or some other issue somewhere in your wiring, you’re just going to kill the battery by leaving it hooked up for long. If you’re handy enough with an ammeter, you can turn off everything on the car, and hook the ammeter in series between the battery post and the lug on the battery wire (series for reading current, not parallel) and make sure that with everything off, it’s drawing 0ma of current. Then do something like open the trunk, and see how the current changes. If I remember right, the trunk light drew 3A of current when I did this same sort of testing a few months back

When I click the turn handle down I can hear the motor run but no lights…I got the interior lights working except the over head ones saying fuel etc.only brakes come on

Alright Thanks I will try that
