A couple of months ago I stumbled across an NOS AM radio kit for the car which included the radio, antenna, bezel as well as the installation diagram which was pretty cool. The camera case finish on the gauge pod ties in nicely with the radio bezel.
See you have a smal Yellow paint spot on the fuel pump. Original? 4441S pump?
Only markings I have found is this: https://www.deadnutson.com/carter-x-fuel-pump-ink-stamps/
I have been using Marcus Anghels 428 Cobra Jet engine detailing guide as a resource, I do see he has the number stamp as well. Would the yellow marking be correct for 68 as he shows on the 69 engine? The pump is actually a reproduction Carter as I had not found a 4441-S for it yet. I appreciate your guidance.
Thanks.
The radio is cool! Did it come with the drawing of the antenna location in the front fender? I need that…
Unfortunately it didn’t have the antenna template. I can make one off of my fender before I install it if you need.
I can measure it on one of my cars.
Kerry, Im not sure about the yellow daub for a 68 car but it can easily be added later if you find better evidence its best to have no marking than a wrong one. Marcus’s effort is clearly for a 69/70 car.
I appreciate your point and yes it certainly can be added back easily enough. I’ll hit it with a little acetone this weekend. Thanks again for all of the help and feedback.
A little progress this weekend. I installed the radiator and hoses and filled the coolant. My goal is to try and fire it up this weekend. The scheduled build date was 5/7/68 with an actual build date of 5/6/68. Let’s see if we can get it running by its’ birthday!
The new radio knobs arrived this week so I took a second to finish that job up. Also, wired up the lighting for the gauges. Conveniently there is a three way dash light plug right by the radio I was able to wire them into.
Time got a little short at the end of the day but I was able to get the H-pipe on, mid-pipes will go on this week. The exhaust is from Precision Exhaust in Ashford Connecticut. They are the only ones along with Scott Fuller that I have found who build a true Cougar exhaust system. This is the second system I have purchased from Dave and the fit and finish are excellent. He even added some extra piping to the tailpipes less turndowns to give room to trim for the GTE tips.
Kerry, you are making great progress and it looks great best of luck with the start up.
I stopped by Kerry’s yesterday, and this car looks even better in person. I don’t see how someone could build it better than he is. Hat’s off - I’m taking a lot of notes and asking a lot of questions!
Thanks Paul and Jason, I appreciate it.
The rest of the missing pieces for the electrical and fuel system arrived today. The alternator harness listed for the 390/428 w/o tach that I originally got had the incorrect connection and did not have the extra battery lead like the original one. The with tech harness was an exact match.
The car had an XR7 sending unit in it when I purchased the car the original unit must have failed at some point and someone just grabbed what they could. I was able to find a nice standard car unit which I glassbeaded and ohm tested prior to installing. The tank is temporary set in for now, tomorrow evening I’ll apply the caulking and bolt it in.
The molded plug for your sender isn’t going to fit. I can rebuild your low fuel sender.
Bill that is an impressive list of Cougars in you signature line, it has to be tough figuring out which one to drive but i would lean towards one of the black cherry cars.
The sending unit I have now should be correct for the car, I believe someone threw an XR7 unit in it at some point just to get by. I sold the XR7 unit on the forum so it has probably passed through your hands at some point.
54 Years ago this Cougar ran for the first time, today we got it fired up again for the first time in probably 20 years.
