1969 Mercury Cougar XR-7 428 Cobra Jet Ram Air Convertible for SALE

Completely ignorant here. Can new holes be drilled in the repop clips?

I would think originals polished might cost $3K by the time you got done. I have not seen the repops so they might look pretty good.

Of note here, you mention reusing the rivets. They look like you could “slid” new clips under the old rivet… Not gonna happen as they are very tight, and no real way to reuse them. Only real solution is to drill them out.

Why not buy the Burton &Bragg reproductions. Your car is definitely worthy of the cost of those ?

I had to google them to figure out what you meant. They look pretty good. Burton Antique Auto Parts | eBay Stores

It looks like they have one set in stock. Don’t know if they are going to continue making them or not

Love the “outta the box” thinking and I actually did try to modify the repro clips to slide over the original factory rivets. Decided to “sacrafice” one repro clip and tried to modify it with a dremel tool to look more like a factory clip. Couldn’t get it to slide on, and frankly you don’t realize how detailed the factory clip was until you put them side by side.

Had no idea about the Burton Antique Auto Parts. About to check that out next.

Really appreciate all of this feedback. This is a car that has so much original equipment intact and in such great shape, I’m walking a line btw restoring what is there and replacing what cannot be restored.

I just checked out the Burton and Bragg offering, and they do look really nice. I guess for nearly 1K with shipping they should. Very tough to tell if the clips they supply are just like the NOS clips or if they require drilling out the old rivets and re-riveting the new clips in. If they do require re-riveting, then it is more or less the same issue with parts that cost 6X.

I am going to call them tomorrow and ask some questions. As that is the last pair, maybe anywhere, I may have to buy them to hold them.

I bought the Burton curb moldings for a 69. I could not get the clips either old or new to snap in.
Took it to a body shop they were not able to clip them either. They said that the moldings and clips would not work because of the profile of the moldings was wrong.

So I have them just hung on the upper clips and bolted on the ends. Looks great from the side you see.

You might have a differant experance. By the way it will take a couple of months they say they have a set on hand but they will have to make them for you.

Oh. Very good to know. TY

I have a set of the B&B moldings, haven’t installed them yet. I can take a ton of pictures and show you the hardware when I get them out of storage. They’re in storage while I build a new garage, which is almost done.

That is very kind and appreciated. TY and yes, would love to see the clips.

I slotted the repo clips with a hot knife and seems to work so far but I did install new stainless rivets.

Still working on the rocker panel issue, but at least the engine compartment is done!

Nice work! Sounds like a new car. Was the 4 speed distributor an original 68/69 piece? Selling it? My SCJ needs one.

Sounds like it must now be pretty nice!

It was an automatic with a 4-speed vacuum advance. I still have the vacuum advance.

Honestly looks like a different car.
