This is a great idea. If you have the time you might want to shoot some pictures and write this up for posterity. I have a feeling that this is going to be one of those mods that gets to be really popular if you can make it work without too much drama.
I ordered one part number off and got the valve that requires air pressure assist to work, so the vacuum is messing with it. I need to reorder a non pilot operated valve. Hopefully it will be here soon and I can get it wrapped up.
Had to go out of town for work. Just got back tonight. Valve has shipped and should be here soon.
That and the WCCC order should get the next round of repairs done.
After that, I am waiting for Christmas. My brother hinted around to not buy any suspension parts until after Christmas, so I have to wait and see what he got me then I can keep on with the repairs. I am hoping its rear springs.
I am thinking of getting a clamp-down cowl vent cover for now to put on if it rains when I have it out to keep my carpet dry.
I highlighted in yellow where I can stick my hand up under the dash and can put my fingers through into the cowl…

Man, that is a nice bro, if he got you parts!!! All my bro would say, “Call me when it’s back on the road, I want to go for a ride…”…He still hasn’t gotten one…LOL.
Ordered the valve again, got the same pilot operated valve. Emailing the seller to see what it will take to get exactly what I described as wanting to him before ordering last time…
I got leaf springs and bushings for Xmas!!!
Springs and bushings! I thought Santa only did “air ride”.

She now sits about 2" higher in the rear. No more wider rear tire rubbing on the wheel well lip.
Also, she has a slight nose down stance instead of the front end being pointed slightly up.
These are the springs my brother got me for Xmas from:

Which of the three did you get?
I want to raise mine.
As far as I know, that’s the stock replacement. I just had really tired rear springs. I’ll ask and make sure.
thanks, i’d appreciate!
Yep, mine is a 289, so it was just the plain springs.
No competition option, no lift.
The car is just now sitting where it should when parts aren’t worn out.
Thanks!
One thing I noticed when looking at the pictures, the new springs have one extra little leaf near where the perch sits. If you order them, you may want to ask about that to make sure that is what comes on the stock replacement.
I missed this thread, it’s a great one!
Also, gotta love anyone gutsy enough to tear into a automatic trans. They really are not hard as long as you keep good track of the all the pieces and you don’t have any left over after assembly! A good manual helps too although I have done many without.
Nice work and great documentation of same!
Regards,
Bob
Thanks!
Over the last few days, I pulled each side the grille out individually and changed out all the headlight adjusting bolts and inserts, as well as installing the longer adjusting bolts to keep the headlight doors from closing too much. So, now I have an even looking grille, even if it still has to be opened and closed by hand.
Good thing I got the car back to road worthy, I walked outside on New Years eve with 30 minutes before a place closed I had to go to and saw that my truck had a flat tire. So I filled it enough to move the truck, and took the car out in the nice weather to get the errands run.
I guess the refurb kit from WCCC including the solenoid valve, hoses, and actuators will be in the future once I get back from the next round of work so my grille is finally mechanically sound, even though its still a little faded.
I drive to Houston tomorrow to get a bunch of equipment ready to head out on a job, then I will most likely be going with the gear to upstate New York and be there maybe two months.
I can’t wait!!! Going from the Gulf Coast to upstate New York in the dead of winter…
Sorry I’ve been so quiet lately. Work has had me going in 1000 directions at the moment. I am getting ready to head to upstate NY for a while, so the car will be sitting under the car port safely blocked in by my truck with the obnoxious alarm system. It has been running well after it warms up. Been driving it around.
Only had one issue with my head light adjusters. Some of them had the soft insert pull out when trying to get the lights set up correctly. I don’t know if I just had really stiff springs in the buckets or what, but they are stock. So, no night driving for me for now until that gets resolved.
I did bite the bullet and picked up a 68 headlight switch for next to nothing on ebay so I can drop that in and get the headlight doors working until I decide to pull the trigger and drop the money for the vacuum motors, solenoid switch and hoses from WCCC. That’ll be when I get back from work and the bank account is out of the red.
That’s it for now.
I am thinking about getting some 1/8" stainless plate and stainless nylock nuts and doing some very delicate stick welding to make my own adjusters that I know will be bullet proof and never rust apart.
Here are my misc videos of the car so far:
For some reason I thought I had more…

Your car seems to be running smooth and quiet. I didn’t think a car could run that smooth with the bowl covers off the carburetor.
