I stumbled across this photo while doing some research for a logo project I’m working on.
Thought this would be the best thread to post it on.

That’s an odd looking grill on that vintage gte pic.
It looks to me like there was some front end damage and the replacement grill sections are not GT-E.
how about eyelids and badges added?
And hood scoop, and moulding?
And they blacked out the doors/headlight covers?
Am I missing something?
GT-Es have blacked out grills.
Hood scoop, side trim and badging are GT-E
Agreed, but the car in the picture only shows GT-E grille eyelids with GT-E trim, the rest of the grille is chromed and without GT-E trim.
Yep - my guess is that some damage occurred later in the car’s life and regular a grill pieces was used but they retained the GT-E headlight covers.
I don’t think someone added all the GT-E stuff to a standard Cougar but stranger things have happened.
Does anyone know for sure where the photo was taken? If it is southern California, and “if” that stadium roof in the background is Fontana, then I know “which” GT-E this was, otherwise who knows?
^^^ I found the pic by accident while searching images for a logo I’m creating for a small race team.
I tracked down the exact “flicker” post this is on, the caption below the vintage GT-E picture reads:
1968 Mercury Cougar
I’m sure that someone can give an exact description. It is a special edition of a 1968 Mercury Cougar. It was photographed at a New England car show in June 1978. That is my brother standing next to it.

It looks like a GT-E to me rather than a standard Cougar with the GT-E pieces added. If you look closely at the area behind the front tire you can see what appears to be the Argent paint in the two tone package. It’s hard to tell on the front valance because of the shadow.

It’s the real deal most likely…who’d clone a gte in 1978. Or better, who’d go through the effort to clone in 78 and screw the grill up that badly.
^^^ LOL! Good point.
“Missed it by THAT much”!
Way cool Phillip, now I want to know who Coug-man is? Betcha hes still here!
No doubt its a GTE, have you ever seen anybody do the bodyside moulding? $$$$$ I really want to know about all these guys, Machonexx knows his Cougars and both of the admin guys and old Faslik would be cool to hear from or find out what they are up to now. Stuff like this just gets me going, way cool, thank you.
How much of the GT-E stuff would have still been available in 1978? It seems like they would have been able to find the right grille somewhere.
Cracks me up that in 1978 the GT-E isn’t in the show - it’s out in the mud parking lot with the pickups and station wagons.
What would crack me up, is if that is now Royce P’s green GT-E…
It’s not an XR-7, and as far as I know neither of my GT-E’s has ever been in New England.
The lower body is not silver, and there is some sort of state inspection sticker in the lower corner of the windshield that might give a clue to someone.
