It's a start again

Yeah, good stuff, use it everywhere keeps the aliens away too.

I did a quick web search and found this image. We can use it on our Cats Sal! So yeah C7 you were right.
Steven

I’ve used Fat Mat before, bought from ebay. Put it on the inside of my door skins, then again behind the door panels on my truck. Night and day difference in road noise.

I need to pull the seats and carpet next to do the rest of the inside of the truck, then maybe the wheels spraying water up under the floors won’t make as much noise.

C7 I didn’t see the the Eastwood logo on your dog house, are you sure that isn’t just plain aluminum foil?
Steve, that cat helmet is cool, do they make them for lap dog’s also?

If I line the inside of the convertible top and line the inside of the windows with aluminum, it would probably keep the heat out much better than just tinted glass.

Guys are giving me some fantastic ideas. laugh

I used a similar product.

That stuff is just butyl and aluminum. The butyl reduces vibrations and the aluminum reflects radiation. For the firewall, you also want something to limit heat conduction. A second layer of butyl and aluminum is not ideal. You need some sort of closed cell foam.

Thanks Adam. What are you going to use?

I bought a Dynapad to use on my firewall. It needs to be trimmed, of course, but it is the perfect width. Under the Dynamat, I have two layers of POR-15 mixed with some Hy-tech ThermaCels. The ceramic beads float to the top, which gave the POR-15 a texture like 320 grit sand paper (not that I see it since it anyway). Since my Cougar is still under construction, I can’t tell you how well it all works yet. As for under carpet insulation, I have not figured that out yet. I’m hoping what I have is good enough. I may upgrade to mass backed carpet or Dynaliner, but that won’t be for a while.

Adam, thanks for the education and the link. I just ordered my dynapad. I have a mat backed carpet ready to install so I hope that the dynapad will be sufficient. When will the spending stop? SalD Cougar Geek.

Once you sell it.

That pic of the cat in the foil hat? TOTAL BULL!! Cats are NOT worried about “hiding” from aliens, cats ARE aliens.
OK, on to cars… I used a butyl/foil adhesive on my firewall, then glued a foil backed carpet underlayment/insulation over that. It seems to have made a huge improvement.
This is the carpet underlayment. http://www.jcwhitney.com/heat/sound-insulation/p2010475.jcwx?filterid=c2663u0j1

I’ve made some progress today on the interior. The gauge cluster would not light up but after a while I got it to light but I need to check some bulbs because some are not lighting up. They were all replaced with sylvania extra bright bulbs. Installed the stereo and slipped 2each 4 inch speakers under the dash pad and 2 each 6 inch speakers under the dash sitting on the hump. I have a 630 Concours series unit that was purchased a year ago. Not the booming sound that you would expect but it’s better than am radio with speaker in the dash. Sorry Bob I decided not to put speakers in the back of the car.

Put my dynapad in place. Wish I would have thought of that before I installed everything to the fire wall.

The windshield and convertible top is on.

I had to undo the top to install the rubbers for the back windows and now the top will not come forward enough to latch. Will have to bring back for minor adjustments.

installed refurbished rear view mirror

Had to stop tonight, I hope to have the interior together tomorrow although I have some work to do on the green car tomorrow morning.

Just noticed my inspection sticker, I think I need seats to pass inspection and I’ll wait until I pass inspection before I wrap in aluminum foil, just in case.

Wrap WHAT in aluminum foil Sal?? On the top, they are usually tight to start and stretch before long. Have you tried sitting the car out in the sun for a bit and then seeing how the closure goes? Looks good buddy.

P.S. Where’s your top switch (and accy, map switch, etc.)?? Think they are supposed to be where the light panel you have above the AC vent is on a '70? '69’s have the top switch dropping down from the dash just above the radio, under the dash pad (if that all makes any sense).

Bob for aluminum foil comment refer to post 81 and beyond

the top switch dropping down from the dash just above the radio, under the dash pad (if that all makes any sense).

The light plate is for a XR7 model and does not light up. I should purchase the block off plate. My top switch is mounted on the dash somewhere under the radio.

I am not certain but I seem to remember that on my 70 XR7 in high school there was a row of silver toggle switches or button looking toggles that controlled things like interior lights etc. in the space where the light panel is.

The light plate is correct for a 70 standard. There was an option to have those lights actually function but it was pretty rare. A plate with rocker switches in that location is correct for a 70 XR7. The block off plate you’re referring to would have been for a car without A/C, either standard or XR7, and would go in the area of the center A/C vent. 70 standards had the power top switch in the same location as all 69 convertibles-hanging down from under the dash. 70 XR7 used the far right toggle switch for the top control. The same far right toggle was used for the rear defogger if so equipped in a 70 XR7 hardtop.

Jeff, thanks for clarification. At the present I am having trouble with the light switch. How does it ground? I have 2 switches. One is just plain shot and the second, I had to silicone the inside mounting plate to the switch. Currently I can not get the Gauge cluster lights to work and with the switch off, I have noticed the side marker lights come on and go off but is so quick that I have not been able to diagnose the problem.

Looks good, Sal

Can’t wait to see your cars in person if I ever get home from work…

I still can’t get my gauge cluster to light up when I pull the switch. It was lighting with the first switch but that switch was worn out. When I changed to the second better switch I put some bulb grease on the dimer mechanism to make it slide easier. That might be whats keeping lights from coming on. I’ll have to pull the switch tomorrow and clean it up and check it before I reinstall. If that doesn’t work, it’s the switch. The other problem is the light to the AC/heat control, If I pull the light and ground it to the radio, it lights but cannot get it to ground on the AC/heater control. SalD Cougar geek

Ordered light switch from napa and will be in Friday.

More progress today. What is the best way to get your carpet to lay down? I know heat will do it but have the car on my trailer and don’t want to spend the time taking it off right now. Carpet in although not fitted well, dash assembled and trimmed out.

and Bob, I know what your thinking… they just can’t stay there can they?

If the carpet isn’t pinned down by anything yet, pull it out on a good sunny day and let it sit in the sun for a few hours, then put it back in. Maybe try heating it up with a hair dryer to help a little too.

Looking great Sal. Would love to see it in person one day.
