trying to find some long tube headers that fit a 351w. Hooker headers? any suggestions?
From experience, Hooker “Super Competition” headers will not bolt in without significant tweaking. I’ve heard (but have not personally verified) that the regular Hooker “Competition” series headers are a much easier install. The Competition series headers use smaller diameter pipes and shorter tubes than the Super Comps, so they might not be the best performance choice for a highly modified engine. Still much better than factory manifolds, of course.
Yeah definitely thank you. I have the factory manifolds on right now but it looks like a hassle to fit long tubes
I’ve also heard that those are easier to fit than super comps. I like your avatar picture picked up that issue of HR at a drag meet
No problem. FWIW though, the Hooker Competition headers are still “full length” just not as long (28" vs. 33" if memory serves) as the Super Comps. That difference, combined with the smaller diameter tubes, is enough to make them significantly easier to fit, according to sources I trust.
I used Super Comps primarily because the Competition series are listed as “will not fit” with manual transmissions, although I’ve read at least one account of their being used with a four speed. If you’re running an automatic, that shouldn’t be an issue for you.
yeah I’m going to need them to fit an automatic. Going to eventually do a Lentech AOD swap
but thanks a lot for the input and advice. I know a buddy runs a 69 “fake Boss 302” with a 351w in it and they run Hooker comps so hopefully they wont be too much of a headache.
Check out Ford Powertrain Applications…best headers, best fit bar none…
Definitely FPA.
Cougarkid, what headers did you eventually go with? Summit lists do many but it looks like after Google search a reading reviews many don’t actually fit at all for a 351w in a 69.
I have used the Hooker Comp headers in my 67 Mustang conv. first with a 351W then a 289 with A/C PS and a 4 speed no issues.
Dave I used the regular hooker comp headers on my last cat and they cleared fine up top but were very tight to the floor and causing some issues with continuing the exhaust. On the drivers side we had to tweak the header to make it work. I would use them again, it doesn’t sound like there are alot of other options besides fpa that work, but if you use them be prepared that with the 351 having a different deck height than the 302/289 it can make the collector tight to the floor.
Just don’t ask them to custom make a set for you. Tried that for my Galaxie and got a less than enthusiastic response. You would think a company that markets themselves as a Ford “specialist” would actually be interested in taking the money of a Ford owner on a Ford application. Anyhow, that was my first, only, and last experience with Ford Powertrain. I only need that type of experience once to make my mind up.
"69 Cougar hardtop, 351W/FMX-Hooker Supercomps flew up into the car. One of the easiest header installations I’ve ever done. Of course had to drop the frame mounted power steering bracket. If you use this bracket stitch weld it after installation. A muffler shop can do this for you. If you have an electronic ignition you may want to unhook that to be on the safe side .
Our 2 '69 Cyclones w/351 and FMXs take the same Supercomps. They too flew up into the engine bay.
Good to know about the super comps, but I don’t like the price. I’m steering away from the basic hookers, seems too many problems, but Hedman 88300 looks like a good fit. Ive also seen Patrioy thrown around, anyone know a good one for a 69 351w and fmx?
I have a set of Patriot full length ceramic coated that I haven’t installed yet. If you want the patriot full lengths for less get the summit house brand. Guess who makes them and whose name is on them? If you guessed Patriot then, well… I have no idea. But you’re right.
If you don’t have to have full length, the Patriot Clipsters are nice as well as easy to install.
I thought the supercomps were supposed to be a bit tighter than the comps? How was the gound clearance and clearance off the floor?
Caleb-the headers fit great with plenty of room in the engine bay considering headers are always a snug fit. Those SuperComps tuck up close to the frame and are barely noticeable from the side and sitting stock w/215-70-14’s all around I’ve never scraped them on anything.
They are expensive. I believe all SC’s come coated and you can just count on an $800.00 bill.I wish I could’ve gotten them for $150.00 but that’s not going to happen. But they are good.
one’s I was looking at are for a c-6 auto only. Has anyone used Flowtech made by Holley? Summit recommends part number 12100FLT.
Would you mind putting up your part number? When searching based on make/model and engine, only Flowtech, Hooker and Hedman.
Sum-g9131 would be your part #. They list it as 260-302 where every other manufacturer lists 260-351w. Anyhow, I have a set for my '68 and they are actually Patriot full length. If you plug in '69 chassis with 302 they list them and every other header listed for '69 with a 351 Windsor. Go figure. Hope it helps.
'69 Cyclone, 351W/FMX, console shift, in this case same as a '69 Cougar. Have to pull the trans so off come the Super Comps to do so.After disconnecting ground wires, idler arm, throttle linkage etc. so as to not bend anything, I pulled the through bolt on the pass side motor mount, raised the engine and those SCs fell right out. It’ll be the same for the driver’s side. Those Hookers fly right in and fly right out.
